It looks like AA Performance in Covina might have acquired the old GEX company that built air cooled engines. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think GEX had a great reputation. My question is, … can anybody confirm this acquisition and has there been any quality control upgrades on the engine building side of things?

Over on the TheSamba.com website, all GEX engines are regarded as the children of the Devil, and to be avoided at all costs. I haven't seen anything about AA Performance buying GEX.

I just found this statement over on TheSamba.com about GEX going out of business last year (2024), but no mention them being taken over by AA Performance:
"This seems like a trend nowadays. GEX, a large VW motor rebuilder went out of business last year and sold everything On Line. Then there is Conemac in the San Fernando Valley. I have known Rick for over 40 years, and he would rebuild about any motor, and I would occasionally see an early 911 motor in his rebuild room. But his mainstay was VW motors. Well in early January, the owner of the building told him he had 'till the end of the month to be out, or his rent would triple for February. Well he couldn't find a buyer, so he sold all of his stuff (that he had been hoarding for 45 years) for SCRAP. Over 200 VW Cases (25 pounds of clean Magnesium goes for about $10!), 400 Cylinder Heads, hundreds of Crankshafts and Flywheels (including 30 hard to find 200mm 6V), sheet metal and two 912 cams that i would have loved to have. But most of all, four buckets of early German Bolts. When I asked him the name of the scrap company, he told me to get the hell out of his shop, too bad. So I went next door to a shop that would work on any car, but did a lot of VW stuff and I asked the owner, who I knew, if he had any early German Bolts, and he pointed to a spot on the floor just behind me and said there were two buckets full right there two days earlier and his brother told him to throw them away. DAMN. Bob B" I don't think GEX will be missed. |
