Watched an old race on YouTube last nite. Riverside ‘84
Never saw this 914 before, if I have I’ve forgotten.
Finished 17th. Excellent seeing the 962 of Holbert on its debut. If not for a mix up on last pit, would have finished 1st.
Anyway, the 914 was piloted by a fellow “Topper” Chasse. You west coast guys prolly knew him. From what I’ve read he had a few championships under his belt.
The IMSA body kits were always interesting to cheat the wind.
Screenshot of car and one i found on net.

Maurice 'Topper Chasse was a top contender in POC time trials. RIR was his (and most of us POC) home track. He was an architect by trade, and a fast 'Shoe !
His POC car was a narrow body 9146 with (rumor) 2.8L, and different ratio gearboxes set up for different SoCal tracks. There are some 914s still running around SoCal with his signature design C/F high duck tail rear spoiler (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)
Dave from TRE, Dick Guldstrand and myself attended his funeral (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
There was a fiberglass shop in Riverside (Hoseman) that mfg these whale-tail 914 rear deck Lids.

@Dion the #14 Holbert/ Lowenbrau 962, currently in collection of Rodrigo Sales. Was good to see on track at the last Rennsport7
I was out at RIR for a few IMSA races, met Al in the garages...helped push that car out. Do you remember when the 3 cars went into turn 1 and that turned out Real Bad ! Lynn St. James in the Ford/Probe was in that mess too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Thanks for all the great replies. I like reading this history. Awesome you fellas knew him.
Marty i don’t remember the Lynn St James dust up. I’ll have to search that.
Yeah been going through the vids on YouTube. Fantastic we know have access to them.
Good ol Diamond P Sports which then think had a hand with ESPN communications regarding races.
Maybe same producer. Anyway I’m a big fan of Holbert since I discovered IMSA as a teenager!
Cried the day Al passed away in the plane crash.

Holbert & Bell quite formidable.

The 1986 IMSA (from media) at RIR, 3 cars: Doc Bundy, EFRobinson, Lynn St. James. Nobody hurt too bad/ nor burned...
We were watching from turn 6 bleachers, it looked really bad from ½ mile away.

Watch the above on YouTube

Regarding red 914, 1981ish Al Torres (hope I got the exact name right) of SoCal came into our shop in a red car very much like that. As I recall it had a flat fan RSR engine. He was a pretty hard-core club and IMSA racer and owned a popular Porsche body shop up in LA.

That would be my bud Jim Torres of Burbank Coachworks; he bought the 914 from Peter Dawe. Jimmy stuffed the engine into one of his several 911s that he raced in those days / pre big $$$ Historic racing days of current times. Jim also owns one (of the 2) Wynns 962s...still drives it too ! He recently restored one of the Whittington 935s for the owner of IMSA team Allegra Racing.

@flxzcat Torres restored Whittington Bros. 935 running at 2023 Classic Le Mans. This car was brought back to life from a total wreck that was in storage for decades.

Yeah, I was working at Peter Dawes place as a fabricator when I met Torres and saw the red 914. I thought it looked pretty fugly but it was obvious it would be a very fast car.

Hausman Fiberglass was the correct spelling., if I remember correctly. This is the Lumbermans race at Mid Ohio in 1979. That rear wing worked really well. Almost flat out in turn 1, without it brakes needed to get through the corner

Look closely at the picture. See the Lexan piece that prevented air from going under that wing. Rules were rules back then.

@9146GUY I think us guys in POC of yesteryear referred to that fiberglass brand as Hoseman , due to their brand constantly bubbling, delaminating, cracking from normal sunlight. Mfg. Hausmann would never work with us on exchange, repair, credit towards another decklid>> i.e. got hosed'. My black 2.7 six/ turbo at RIR in its narrow-body days; with a Hoseman front lid. We found A.I.R., Fiberglass Trends, and Mitcom brands to be 100% high QC.
