The engine cooling fan on the motor that came with my car has several broken fins/blades. Looking for a replacement i can only seem to find used part? Does no one produce oem style or aftermarket replacements for this? Is used my only option?

Sorry if this has been covered. Did not find anything in the search.

No problem with pre-owned, just typically opt to go new if it's available.

Not enough money in it to make new fans IMHO. Used ones are available, often for a reasonable amount of money. Just make sure not to get the "lightweight racing fan", because you already have one of those--it's a fan with blades broken off.

Would be funnier if it were a joke. People actually sell them like this.

Going back to the Porsche Panorama June 1973, the winning Elliot Forbes Robinson E Production car used a fan with all of the fins removed, except for the four that had the bolts holding the fan belt ring.

Used fan not an issue but you need to find one with the correct timing marks for your engine.

No blades is a good way to get no cooling for your heads

Probably ok if you rebuild the motor every weekend

Here's a used one, couldn't tell you if it'd work on your 914 or not:

If $299 is the going price for a good used one then I bet a lot of them will come out of the woodwork. Like the one sitting on the shelf in my garage attic storage.

I've got one I've been trying to sell for about three years for $50 with no takers. Mine's even been blasted and repainted.

Verify timing marks.

My 75 1.8 fan has a single mark only at base timing of 7-8. It did not have either the TDC mark OR the total timing mark of 27-30.

The 73 2.0L fan I replaced it with had TDC white and total timing red.

You need the TDC mark for leak down testing.

Using a flexible dress tape measure 1/2 way round both directions (splint difference) and make a 2nd TDC mark for the opposing cylinders.

Or if you have a VERY VERY LARGE duct (I dubbed it a "sewer pipe") feeding cold air directly from the headlight buckets straight through the car to the fan inlet. Quite a few 914-4 racers used to do that, to take advantage of a rule written for the LBCs (Little British Cars) that allowed cooling air to be ducted in from the headlight buckets.

IIRC, the cars that ran that way would rebuild about once per season. Assuming they didn't have to spend any real time at a stop or at very low speeds.

I'm guessing SCCA Club racers still had some fandage going on. After all, Ginther had Porsche money, club racers do not...Chris Foley would know, I think he came up with that idea back in the 90s. His F Production race car (still for sale) has it. - GA

Not to name names or anything, but an ebay search might turn up a certain business selling "lightweight racing fans" that are just normal fans with a blade or two broken off here and there. I suppose they get more money for those than if they more truthfully listed them as "partly functional fans, missing some blades".

Whatever fan you source, would be wise to check #1TDC with a dial indicator to verify the notches on the fan/shroud are correct. My $.02

Looks like I'm making a deal for a very nicely restored family from cholland that has no indicator marks on it so will need to do that either way. That will require some more research. By the time this cars on the road I'm sure i will have annoyed at least half the forum with my constant questions
