Trunk Lock Backup Camera
Has it been done?

People use solenoids to control the lock so why not utilize the hole for a camera?
Just a thought.

You need a back up camera?
Small sports car…. Adding weight takes away from that experience
Plus it’s only 6 feet from the drivers seat to the back bumper

I hate those trunk solenoids. And don't see a need for a backup camera.
Where would you install the screen

As low as our cars sit you'd be lucky if you could see the license plate of the car behind you.

I love the idea, but have so little seat time in a 914 (even less in reverse) that I dont know if it provides any value or not.

Apologies if it offends but...a backup camera on a 914...?

Backup cameras were mandated because soccer moms were backing up their big wide tall SUVs over their kids...I find little value in such a thing on our cars.

I think front cameras should be required, or limit the front hood height to 30" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Why does this even exist? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Because the auto manufacturers convinced people that "bigger is safer". And that's what the soccer moms believe... that a big car/suv will protect their "precious angels" when they get hit because mommy can't be bothered to put down her phone and stop texting. And other reasons I can't say on here because it would violate the "no politics" rule. </rant>

I want front and rear facing cameras on all my 914s. Not for a backup cam. So I have proof that the idiot that just hit me was paying attention to instatalk, facegram, snapbook, etc... and not to his driving. That way I can sue the f**k out of them and win.

Yes, this IS a sore point with me. There was no camera in Betty's car to use as evidence after I got hit.

I have one to install in Elwood. I will have one in Igor and Betty's car when they get back on the road.

Yes, this was my thought as well. combo backup/full time camera. Front facing is a great idea too.

Check out the Garmin mini 3 for dash cams.
Really small and work great. You could point one backwards as well as they link on the app.

Does it record front and back simultaneously or is it front or back? Looking for recommendations. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

The Garmin mini cams are just right for the 914. I have one ( front facing ) in both the 914 and 987

I find backup cameras to be incredibly helpful.
Granted, a 914 is small enough that backing up isn't much of an issue. But its still helpful, especially in dynamic environments like car shows where you have people and kids going all over and not watching cars moving around them.

I'm putting one in the bay window bus i'm making, and will put them on my rabbit pickup and vanagon as well. The carplay units on Amazon are so cheap, and they all come with the cameras and wiring. Its just a no brainer to me.

I was one of those guys that HATED back up cams when they came out, but now I want them on everything. The cameras are tiny and just bolt to your license plate.

Back up cams are useful. I find the surround view cams in new cars incredible and a must have. No more curb rash on rims. I'll need to look to see if they are available aftermarket.

Backup cam / recorder

Something like this.

Rear view cameras are weird to me, the tow rig i borrow has one that ties into a camera on the back of the trailer, but when I’m not towing anything it uses a camera mounted on the tailgate handle. The perspective is weird, i also never realized how much i use the rear view mirror to look into the backseat of my vehicle while driving….
