Because I don't have enough to do, that's why.

I've fallen in love with the Group 5 car that's recently been delivered to The Red Barn where we're going to give it a bit of love and improvement. This will be covered in various "At The Red Barn" YouTube videos.

THIS thread will cover my attempt to build my own set of Group 5 body panels. You'll have to wait to learn what material(s) I may have selected, as well as seeing which chassis they go on. For now, let's get started.

I like most of the proportions of the existing bodywork but IMO, with some minor changes and "corrections", it could look even better.
I figured the best way to start would be to get a baseline into Fusion where I can try out various changes and get a feel for the look before committing to a final design.
I'm still quite new to 3D scanning and here you can see I ended up using a combination of reflective markers and scanning spray.
The spray dulls shiny surfaces that give the scanner a hard time. In all, it's pretty interesting in that it lasts only about 15 minutes before starting to disappear. It evaporates, leaving no residue!
It's totally gone from the rear fender leaving only the reflective markers but you can see how it's disappearing from the front.

The project scope immediately gets out of control.

A key change I want to make re: the existing available Group 5 panels is to have the bodywork not be an overlay. Essentially, make them replacement panels. Yes, that will mean cutting off all 4 quarter panels and bonding on new ones. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
I first need to know where the Group 5 panels differ in size/shape from the factory sheet metal. This means I need a scan of the factory panels. Well, it's a good thing I have a few 914s sitting around!
So, I scanned the Ferrari car's rear quarter. The trick now is to get the Group 5 and Ferrari car scans into Fusion and used to create surfaces so I can mate the Group 5 features to the areas of the factory panel where they fit to the chassis.
I mean, how hard can that be? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

One of my '80s hang out places: Dan McLoughlin's A.I.R. fabrication + fiberglass shop, 149 Santa Anita ave/ Burbank. He designed + molded the Gr-5 body kits>>this one for John Bond jr.
Pic is from the '80s 'VW + Porsche' magazine article; AIR Porsche Bond car. 930 Turbo+trans drive-train.
934 engine would have run with flat fan tho.

Clean installation, Dan was a perfectionist. His customer list was like; Steve McQueen, James Garner, Jim Hall, Richey Ginther, Whittington Bros, Paul Newman; from CanAm, RS, RSR , IROC, 935 era body panels. All of my 'glass gt parts (flat-fan car) came from Dan's shop.

Rick, those are simple T6 aluminum blocks, that are machined/ drilled and done.
On the outer ends of my QuickSix mount bar (yellow stripes) I use the rear trans mount rubber-pillows from the 9146. This gives the drivetrain decent freedom to move 'Just enough.

Once you get a design you like in Fusion, how do you plan to turn that into an actual part?

@FL000 @Shivers Scanning generates what's called a "mesh". To print, I need a solid body. To do that, the mesh gets opened in Fusion and is used as the basis to reverse engineer the shapes and work up the surfaces (or body) that'll be printed, machined, etc.
Depending on the complexity of the shape(s), it can be a ton of work, especially for a newbie like me who's learning as they go.

So don't hold your breath on this. It's probably going to be a little while.

I am so glad it ended up in your capable hands. A car like that needs just the right combination of insanity and perfectionism.
