I (perhaps stupidly) entered my 914 to be part of a High School homecoming parade. I figure I can either carry one passenger (seated), or perhaps 1-2 seated up on the targa bar. This will be strictly parade duty; probably 5mph.

It putting one or two people up on the targa bar a non-starter? Am I putting my rear window and/or bodywork at risk?

More than strong enough.
I’ve cut up a couple 914’s. The targa bar is really thick metal and the inside panel has channels in it that make it very stiff. I used to have people on mine when I was in high school. I think I had six in the car at one time.

One of the advantages of weighing a bit less is not warping stuff. Even if they didn’t dress warm enough

Well, they could wear less. To save weight, of course.

It’s a roll bar. It can handle the weight of the car. I saw the aftermath of one that rolled down an embankment. The front windshield was smashed down to the height of the targa bar, but the targa bar was unscathed except for the edges were a little rounded. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, I used to cruise the avenue. We would sit on the targa bar, eat a burger and watch the cars go by. I miss those days!!

I was in a race once

2 914/6 hit nose to tail in a fast corner

Back car went into the air
Rolled upside down as it was crossing over the lead car

About 8-10 foot in the air
Completely passed over the top of the lead 914/6
Landed on the other side, upside down

The targa bar half caved in on only the passenger side (corner that hit)
About 12 inches of crush

From being dropped approximately 8-10 foot onto the corner of the targa

I always thought it was one of the strongest parts of the car. I never felt cutting it off for the old beach boys cab conversions was a good idea.

With the confidence instilled by all of your wisdom, I just went to my 914 and plopped my 200lb+ weight on the targa bar. No issues.

I might ask that the High School not use my car for the football offensive line, but other than that, feels pretty good.
