Check to see if the gland nut is tight. Torque spec is fairly high and if not tightened enough they can loosen up.

Gland-nut? Well my mind went there, will figure out the suspension version of this phrase and get back to you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Check to see if the gland nut is tight. Torque spec is fairly high and if not tightened enough they can loosen up. |

The torque spec from Bilstein was 95ft lbs + or - 7ft lbs (little paper instruction insert that comes with the inserts) for the strut insert retaining nut. I had a clunk from the left front on my father's 914 before I replaced the strut inserts. Found the left front strut insert retaining nut was finger tight from the person who installed them in a repair shop many years ago before I started to go through my father's 914. I torqued the retaining nuts to spec with the Bilstein tool adapter when I put the new strut inserts in. No more clunk.

In some of the posts pipe wrenches were mentioned- not here, in a suspension forum (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I placed the order directly through Bilstein. I think it was just over $20 shipped to my door. Re-read the installation instructions and the recommended torque spec from Bilstein is 95 + or - 7ft lbs. ![]() |

A locking tool used for bicycle bottom brackets works well but pipe wrench will usually get the job done in a pinch.

Don't tell anyone - I may use the pipe wrench method ...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) Definitely the best way to remove. I’ve done dozens of them. Might gouge the gland nut a little while tightening but it’s all hidden under the strut dust cap. It’s more important to be tight than pretty. The stock “tool” is junk. |
