Hi All,
Been reading a lot about the distributors in our cars. I have found a lot of stuff on dwell, points O-ring etc., but haven't been able to find anything about the physical parts of the distributors. Are there bushings that are replaceable? Are they not worth fixing? Any way I only have one and its on my car so nothing to open and play with. Are there any threads/articles that you know about? Thanks, Peter |

All you need to know is to send it to Sparxwerks. Bill Fowler is the master and has the specialized equipment needed.

Search over at the Samba.com website, particularly the 411/412 Forum. Those VW’s use the same types of Bosch distributors as our 914’s use.

All you need to know is to send it to Sparxwerks. Bill Fowler is the master and has the specialized equipment needed. https://www.sparxwerks.com/ +1 on Sparxwerks. Just about to send off to Bill my original German Pierburg fuel pump for my VW to have it rebuilt. My first time dealing with him, but he has a great reputation and he has been very responsive to my emails. He took the time to make sure the pump I have is worth rebuilding, reviewing pictures and asking questions, so that I don't waste my time. He is already on Jeff's list of vendors for throttle body rebuilds, and here's what he said when I asked him about that service: "I do rebuild lots of the Porsche 914 throttle bodies. With that said, I do advise customers to close the throttle plates on the throttle body. Stick a bright light under the throttle body and snap a picture. This shows how much wear there is on the throttle plate by the light coming around the plate and in the throat of the throttle body. Not all of those throttle bodies can be rebuilt/restored. If it is a high mileage throttle body, the throttle shafts or bores wear and the plate can then shift and rub against the side of the throat. In really bad cases, the throttle plate is too worn and there's a deep groove in the throat where the plate rubbed. I have a customers 914 throttle body here now. It has light to moderate wear in those parts. I'll install new throttle shaft bushings to remove that wear and vacuum leaks and he'll have just a bit of wear on the throttle plate and throat but it will still be adjustable on the adjustment screw and work fine. If I ever find any free time, I'm going to try to get some new oversize throttle plates made. I can then bore out the throats of the throttle bodies and install the new throttle plates. The late Vanagon throttle bodies seem to all be really worn in that area. I charge $250 to rebuild those throttle bodies. You can see a few of the 914 throttle bodies restored along with other restored parts on my instagram page- https://www.instagram.com/sparxwerksllc/ |

Are they not worth fixing? Any way I only have one and its on my car so nothing to open and play with. Are there any threads/articles that you know about? Thanks, Peter The main issue is faulty vacuum cans that don't hold vacuum and worn out top advance assemblies, which make points/dwell setting inconsistent, both of these parts are NLA ,some vacuum NOS ones pop up on the Samba.com but are usually crazy money . Found a guy in my country selling replacement ones but he was out of stock and an email inquire to him he stated these Chinese units were not up to scratch when he tested them on his Sun dizzy tester , he went on to say the biggest issue was they had incorrect advance and not much better than a 009 @ the dreaded flat spot they have . I have rebuilt several 205 series SVDA units but have now run out of good cores and parts to do so ,just did the last one I had ...see pics, cheers. ![]() ![]() |
