Heads-up for fellow teeners: Blaupunkt’s new “Frankfurt Stereo” is coming I came across this and thought others might be interested. Blaupunkt is launching the Frankfurt Stereo retro car radio (expected Spring 2026). It’s styled like a 1970s unit, so it should look right at home in a 914 dash, but it still includes modern features like A 3″ Digital Colour Display, DAB+, FM/AM, Bluetooth streaming and hands-free, USB/AUX, and multi-channel pre-amp output. The form factor and styling look era-correct with the black face, chrome trim, rotary knobs, and push buttons. Could be a nice option for anyone wanting a stock-looking setup with modern functionality. https://blaupunkt.com/product/frankfurt-stereo/ |

I see the LMKUU preset buttons. Those came to the US as well, in some European cars. My dad had one in his Karmann Ghia. It's for switching bands. They represent German words for different bands of radio. Long Wave, Medium Wave, (I don't Know) Wave, and Ultra Wave. I seem to recall that USA AM radio was the "M" band and USA FM was the U. I don't think we ever did long wave here. Edit: Googlez for the win... U = 87-100 MHz FM equivalent Ultrakurzwelle (ultra short wave) very high frequency K = Short Wave Kurzwelle Short wave M = 520-1640 KHz AM equivalent Mediumwelle Medium wave L = 150-340 KHz Langwelle Long wave |

I have a feeling this is going to be a pricey unit.
But good move by Blaupunkt. |

anyone got a depth dimension on these units.
i have explored internet trying so see if its shorter in depth than original units, and can't find a dimension. reason i ask, down here in north antartica i doomed re fitment of original piece of crap sapphire radio, charming as it was, and as sentimental as i am about my banana peel shredding 1.8, because i had to "butcher" it according to the 914 expert dr. 914 to have a 914 in north antarctica 30 years ago and convert it to rhd. and therefore face the impossibility of the assymetrical fire wall. shitty saphirre would not go back in. too deep. but now i am very interested if these units are shallow enough to go in the hole that lurks behind the basketweave. i reckon these radios look the horn. not that i listen to the radio when i drive my 914. i don't. don't have one. and even if i had one i probably would not listen to it. but i sure would like to think about listening to one and looking at one. anyone got a depth dimension on these units. i have explored internet trying so see if its shorter in depth than original units, and can't find a dimension. Well, I expect they will have the same chassis and innards as the current Blaupunkt 1-DIN spec radio heads do - like the one I currently have in my car. They are actually significantly shorter than the original Blaupunkts (I have a Frankfurt from ~'79 that I took out of the car). Note that the "features" mention "short body"... ![]() The new unit didn't fit in the original snap-in metal carrier - it is in fact thicker than the original radio - it just slides in to the opening. It is therefore only held in by the rear attachment screw. The firewall attachment point was far enough away so that I had to make a bracket to get it attached in the rear. I think the only thing I will miss in the retro design is the front-mounted USB. I actually use that a lot, having music stored on several USB sticks. However, it shouldn’t be too hard to put in a discreet under-dash USB extension for that. |
