I keep seeing photos of hell hole and long rust out, but the heat tube that leads forward to the passenger compartment is never rusted through.

Is this tube made of thicker steel?

No. I haven’t measured it per say, but it looks like the standard 1mm or 0.8mm we see elsewhere.

Battery acid doesn’t really get to it.

It sits forward from where the top of the long is usually compromised (under the battery tray) and it is also not anywhere near the bottom part of the long where the acid usually pools.
