Hi all,

looking for some information and help, just finished welding my engine cradle for the EZ36 swap, next step is the actual mount of the engine.
the engine is mated to a TY856, a 6 speed transmission (STI) which seems way bigger than the 5 speed that people usually use.
would appreciate any pictures and information on an installed TY856 -
how much was the engine needed to be moved forward to allow the fitment (length wise) of the transmission?
was the rear trunk floor needs to be cut in order to clear the clutch lever, starter and Bellhouse?
if the engine is too low, will it have oil pan ground clearance issues ?

i am too deeply invested in the project, already modified the transmission (converted to 2WD and cut the tail) and dont want to back off now... if i need to cut the trunk's metal sheet, will probably do it, just need to know how much.
also, any reinforcement needed incase of cutting the trunk? i guess i will need to weld some reinforcement between the rear shock towers and the transmission mount...
any information is much appreciated.

Thanks, Raviv.

some pictures -
This is the engine that i pulled out, its an old SBC with the original trans, i just dont like the V8 sound in the 914, its too heavy and i needed a project (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif)
Attached Image

this is the engine that goes into the car, EZ36 out of a tribeca with an STI 6 speed transmission.
managed by MS3Pro, did my own wiring, the engine is currently running full sequential, both spark and injection.
engine is running on individual throttle bodies that i designed and 3D printed from high grade engineering material (PPA-CF), designed the idle control as well

transmission 2WD conversion, cut the center diff and welded it so all the torque will be transferred to the front shafts.
tail section was cutted and welded.

You're the first I know to use the STi 6 speed because it's, um, too big...

There is a starter that is clocked 'flatter'. I don't remember what year/model it's from, so no cutting trunk floor there.

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. I'm currently fitting a vq35de in mine, and it's looking like I will 3dp an intake also or hack up the engine lid.

I don't like a 350 in a 914 either (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Thats a bit concerning, is that really the case? no one ever fitted a TY856 in a 914? the 5 speed is just too delicate for high power applications and the 6 speed STI can take the beating all day long.
but if i have to cut the trunk's floor, i will do it, cant go back now, pfffff.....

Measure the V8 and 901 tip to tail and measure the Subi and 6 sp. Remember there is still amount 4-6 inches behind the trans mounts with the 901. This space is usually reserved for the muffler. But you may.need it foe the transaxle

The mt5 is almost the same length as a 914 trans. The mt6 is quite a bit longer. I’m sure you can make anything fit but it will be a chore. Probably have to use twin mufflers since there won’t be any room behind the trans without the muffler hanging way off the back.

not trunk... bumper. You'll need to measure but that's what I recall.

Plain WRX trans can handle the 3.6L. It's close to the WRX hp/tq.

Ravive, there are 2 different Subaru 6 speeds. The other one is shorter but I'm not sure of its power limitations. The TY75's (w/ 3.9 final) & the 6 speeds share the same final drive , IIRC.
EDIT: The starter that fits is from 1999 Subaru Impressa. Rock Auto has rebuild ones for cheap. Opt for the higher KW model if in stock..

mine is a TY856, as the TY75 is very limited in its torque handling capability.
went with the TY8 to make sure the trans is not a limiting factor to what i am planning.
the EZ36, with the headers, intake and a proper tune, will generate approx 280-290HP and approx 270 lb-ft, which is the top limit of the TY75.

since im planning on turboing the engine, pushing it to approx 400HP and 350-360 lb-ft, i need a transmission that i can beat without worrying it will shatter.
the TY85 can handle 400 lb-ft all day long.
