My Driver's side exterior door handle is shot and trying to source a replacement without having to buy with a new lock cylinder (would like to stay to a single key).

I've tried one from 914Rubber and Sierra Madre collection. Neither one worked due to the fact the hole for the lock cylinder is too small. Did a quick search here and saw a comment not to buy the reproduction handles for that reason. I've also looked some on eBay and all the used ones are broken or are the repos.

I thought a saw one that no longer used the lock cylinder and converted to a push button, but can't seem to find that now.

Has anyone had luck with ordering a new door handle recently?

TIA.

He has new handles w/o cylinders. You can transfer your cylinder to your new handle. I did it recently.

The actual handle is snapped into 2 pieces. And on the back side the mounting bracket and part of the back side have broken off. It was broken when I bought the car and figured it would be an easy part to replace. I will post some pics tomorrow when I get a chance.

Thanks for all the responses and I will reaching out @thecabinetmaker .

Refurbished by Curt or new from Porsche, at least if you want the lock to actually work. All the new aftermarket handles (that come from the same source no matter the vendor) have issues with the lock cylinder fitment.

Gotta keep everything lubed up or the flap breaks off when you pull really hard.

When you get the replacement handle, do yourself a favor and remove the actual latching mechanism from inside the door and soak it in some arts cleaner to clean out 50 years of accumulated and hardened grease and dirt. Then oil the latch mechanism and re-install into the door. You can now enjoy a door that opens and locks/unlocks easily without putting a strain on your newly replaced outside door handle. When I did this to my 914, I was amazed at how easily the outside door handle locked and unlocked the door.

100% (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif)

i fully serviced my door handles and mechanisms last year.
the doors open using my finger tiips.
effortless. i was transported back to 1989 when i first bought the car.
thats how it was.

well worth the effort to lube and grease everything in there.

do the window winders, the door stay mechanism, the works. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

@mepstein is pointing to the same advice. words of wisdom.

Lube up the window winder mechanism and rails, cable pulls for the lids, seat rails, interior door latches, pivots on the wiper motor mechanism, etc. it transforms the car.

Thank you go fast. This is the#1 reason that door handles break.

I broke one on my first 914 back in college. Definitely because I was pulling on it too hard when it got stiff. The flaps are basically chromed pot metal.

Ahh, the infamous "pinggggg" inside your door that goes along with 914 ownership at some point. I've repaired as well as replaced and rekyed them before.

Minor hijack - If anyone is selling drilled lightened handles I would love a set. Obviously more for the aesthetic vs saving an ounce or whatnot but it would look cool. (I already have no lock cylinders, windows, or fancy door panels in terms of door lightening)

my car had that repair done on both handles when I bought it , works very well , right side one had spots in the chrome so I bought a perfect chrome replacement one for very cheap on Ebay as it had crack on in the rear tab and I snapped it off by hand .
Pot metal just isn't strong enough when the latches are semi seized .
