Good evening fellow Teeners. I have a question regarding the thermostat cable. How does the thermostat cable thread into the thermostat? I was looking at replacement cables and it doesn't look like it has a threaded section to the cable. I started to disassemble the underside to replace my push rod tube seals and perform a valve adjustment. I know I need to replace my thermostat which I just found out today had failed after lord knows how long (still has the VW logo and part number). I tried to remove the thermostat cable from the old thermostat and it snapped off inside which I am not surprised due to the age of the vehicle. Thank you in advance. It’s just a bicycle derailleur cable. The clamp is on the flaps.

The cable isn't threaded. It's connected to the thermostat with a hollow threaded piece as shown here:

Thank you everyone for your input. Well I learned the hard way haha. I will be purchasing a derailleur cable to replace it and cut to fit. My other question is what size grommet has everyone installed to replace the NLA grommet that keeps the cable from chaffing against the cooling tin? Do you install one that sits flush on the tin or on the bottom side of the tin underneath?
