Hey all,
I just brought home a new-to-me ’73 914 project. Before I put the carbs back on and try to get it running properly, I want to completely redo the fuel system first. We’ve all seen the horror stories of these cars going up in flames, and I’d really like to avoid becoming one of them. The car has dual Weber 48s and a Facet electric fuel pump. I’m trying to figure out the best/safest way to run the fuel lines: - Rubber hose? - That AN6 braided PTFE stuff? - Steel hard lines? - A combination? I’m also wondering: - Should I relocate the fuel pump to the front of the car? - Should I run a return line? - Pressure regulator recommendations for Weber 48s? My goal is basically a “fireproof” fuel setup… or as close as realistically possible. This is pretty much the last major thing to tackle before the car is driving again. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) Thanks in advance! |

I’ll let other, more qualified people reply but will recommend the return line and compatible pressure regulator. I’m currently in the process of adding these to my dual 44 IDF setup.

I run FI today, however one one of my previous air cooled cars I ran Webers. I used a Holley fuel pressure with a gauge. 2.5 - 3.5 psi and ran a return. At one point I switched to stainless fuel lines in the engine bay between the carbs (with flexible lines at the carbs to account for vibrations and what not). This was short lived because I found the car became susceptible to vapor lock. I pulled the stainless lines out of the engine bay and went to high quality ptfe lines and AN fittings.
With webers fuel pressure is very important because too much pressure will over power the needle and seat. |

Front cheapie (reasonably quiet) pump from Amazon, new Tangerine SS pressure line, flared copper line into the engine compartment, filter, regulator, gauge and twin Weber 40 IDF's. Runs great at 2.5 psi max
No return line I use the same setup in several other sporting machines |
