Specifically for a 73 2.4 914 and a 2000 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. Since the 914 is almost back on the road, I'm shopping insurance and was wondering what y'all use. Maybe get the 914 and the truck insured with the same company? Or Hagerty for the 914 and something else for the truck? Thanks in advance!

I use Hagerty for both my '73 914 and my '04 Boxster. I use Progressive for my '04 Chevrolet truck and my wife's '15 Lexus RX 350.

I like the "agreed value" part of Hagerty and adding my Boxster to that policy was less expensive than insuring with Progressive.

All our "regular" cars are insured through USAA. Their customer service, including banking, has taken a steep dive lately but unfortunately that probably can be said for society in general nowadays. We initially had our three vintage cars insured with American Collector's Insurance as it was the partner vendor with USAA. However they had a really steep price increase the next year so I shopped around and Hagerty was the best deal for us by far. Less than 50% of the cost of American Collector's as well as the other companies I got quotes from. Vintage car insurance has some very specific restrictions on usage and storage, so make sure you are aware of those. I doubt your Tacoma would qualify. The main ones are that when not in use the vehicle must be parked in an enclosed garage and that it is only used for recreational purposes -- pleasure drives, club events, etc. No grocery shopping, running errands, or the like.

Hagerty, while they support SCCA and its programs, are usually quite spendy. My collector/classics and enclosed trailer are through Heacock Classic.

2026 policy:
- '74 street 914, $25k named value
- '74 race 914 (stripped and caged but street reg'd), $10k value
- '92 968, $30k value
- '01 28-foot enclosed trailer, $7k value
- Comp/collision, includes towing, $1k deductibles

I pay a $760 annual policy premium. It does require the cars to be garaged in locked storage and allows "occasional pleasure use" (i.e., no commuting or commercial use).

I don't know about other insurance companies, but Hagerty has a "Cherished Salvage Value" with their policies.
If I remember correctly, you used to have to ask for it(at no additional cost), but perhaps it is a standard feature now.
In the event of a total loss, Cherished Salvage allows you to keep your car and still receive the full Guaranteed Value(pre-agreed value).

If that's important to you, then consider this when comparing insurance companies.

I use Hagerty and the agreed upon value coverage. If my Porsche 914 is ever damaged, then there are no hassles or negotiating what you will get paid if it's a total loss. I also insure my 2002 Porsche 911 with Hagerty as well, using the agree value coverage.

Hagerty doubled my premium at renewal this month. No explanation from them. Rarely driven 914-6, no claims and I’ve been with them 10 years.

Have had St Farm for a long time. Less agent-friendly over the past several years (push to website and app.. ).
They have a Classic Insurance Group actually administered by Hagerty.

1970 914-6 Guaranteed value $60,000
Must be in private garage/barn/pole building
No special plates or driving restrictions ( assume I can't use as a Uber though...)
$1 million bodily/property/uninsured
$250 collision
$100 other than collision
$750 spare parts coverage/no deductible

$400/yr

Just add your collector car(s) to your main auto policy and get a "fleet" rate. You just need to make sure you have "agreed value" and a low mileage provision (under 3K usually) for the cars. For me, Hagerty's quote for exactly the same coverage was almost double.

Which mainstream insurance company offered you agreed value?
I had wanted to add my 914s to my AAA policy a few years back, but they would only commit to market value(as determined by them) at the time of a total loss.

Check the Estimated Annual Mileage endorsement in your Hagerty policy. At policy renewal, it automatically resets to an assumed 3500 miles/year but you can declare 1000 miles/year and the premium will go down.

I’m in California. We have nine cars in the family, four of which are classics. Two of our classics are covered by agreed value policies with Haggerty. Love them.

That said the other two classics cannot get classic car insurance and are basically with AAA. If there is a total loss, we will not get anywhere near the value of these cars.

Only have a two car garage. In California, you cannot get an agreed value policy unless your classic is in the garage. Doesn’t matter if on your property, you have a locked gate, permanent awning, and the safest outdoor spot in existence. You cannot get classic car insurance in California for that situation, even if you sign a separate rider.

In other states you can. I asked my friend Ben who has nine classic Fords, including a bronco, 4 x 4 crew cab 60s pick up and a bunch of other super valuable cars. He told me he says they’re all in the garage to the classic car insurance company. He has a two car garage.

Let me tell you this from experience. I was a salesman for AAA auto back in the 90s. Fire and casualty agent in California. If you have a claim, and the adjuster comes to your house which they will. They will ask your neighbor which cars are in the garage. They’ll probably ask a few neighbors to confirm the story.

If they find out that that car is not in the garage, you are not getting a dime. True story.

I just got off the phone with Hagarty to cancel the insurance for my 914-6 that just sold
Insured vehicles
1970 PORSCHE 914/6
Value: $170,000VIN: 9140430041
EditSellRemove
1986 PORSCHE 928
Value: $40,000

Annual Premium
$2,164.00 / year
Paid in Jan getting $612. Back. And cherished value on 914-6 sale price was $161,000 on BAT so there value was very close.

I have never had a claim, but they have been easy to deal with over the last 19 years, increasing value as I was working on it. I paid $15,000 on it back in 2007

I use AAA for the rest of my regular cars
