Being lucky (fortunate) to own/operate several sporting machines I must share. I have had this near original 1975 911S for close to 20 years, probably logged a couple thousand miles with the exception of the cross country trip home with her. It has been one thing or another that kept her off the road, the past several years I was unable to repair the bucking/surging. I had a former Stoddard mechanic do a full rebuild and after I got her home could never get a smooth transition between 2,000 and 3,000 rpms.
I finally removed the CIS system and installed a pair of Weber 40 IDTP, has never run better, just wish I would have done it sooner.

Comparing it to my 2056 build is quite different. the 911S is much more "luxurious" for lack of another term and my lowly partly original 1975 914 (2056) is (was) their entry level machine and what a difference. Having cut my teeth in the late 1960's/early 1970's with several T1 and T3 examples the 914 is much like going home.

I'll bet many others can share similar experiences

I have two 914s and a 911SC. The ride in the 911 is certainly more luxurious than the ride in the 914. I also have AC in the 911. Gotta say that my six conversion is much more fun to drive. The 914 grabs you by the brain and keeps hold until you turn off the key. Well, it isn’t really like that, but it comes pretty close.

I love all Porsches, but the only 911 that I have driven that came close experience wise to a well setup 914 was a 73 911 RS Lightweight (a real one), Given the cost of a real 73 RS M471, Ill stick to 914s for now.

For the closest to pure, I think the 914 has it over most sporting machines. Lightweight, great feel, some power (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

overall driving experience (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

My first car in HS was a 73 1.7. I've also had 86 and 89 944 Turbos. Very different experiences, obviously - and all great. My current 74 2.0, 23 Macan S and 67 911 are all different as well.

The 914 is a sports car. The 911 is a sporty car.
But spartan is the right term. I also like "analog"

I'm sure in it's day it WAS a sports car. But no passenger mirror. No dash vents, even - but those wing windows and rear pop outs are really effective. And that 6 sounds great and can do a pretty good pull.

The 911 just requires you to be present. My wife will frequently point out something along the drive that I just didn't see - I'm driving and I'm into it. Listening, smelling - not trusting the other cars around me.

It just requires the overwhelming amount of your attention - in a good way.

Most of my adult life I have had 914s, along with an 86 944 Turbo.

A while back a 1980 924 Turbo fell into my lap. I think the coolest thing about that car is how it feels like a 914 and a 944 turbo had a baby, you feel elements of both of them in that car. The lack of power steering, the dogleg old school syncro Porsche trans, the analog and somewhat unrefined (and underpowered off boost) nature of the engine all feel very 914 like. But then the comfort, ride quality, and build quality feel very much more 944/911, the handling is that of a transaxle Porsche, then the boost kicks in... Such an interesting experience.

Oh - that's interesting - and after thinking about it, I totally get it!
