Hi all!
Been having a no-start issue, and had my car taken to a well-regarded 914 shop. They informed us that their policy is that they only use brand-new parts that they source themselves. Outside of the no-start issue, it appears that the NOS fuel injectors that we had put on it are leaking, alongside the short hoses leading to them. We just replaced the whole fuel system with Tangerine Racing stainless lines with new rubber. They said that the tiny rubber lines are backordered, and the injectors run about $500 per. I'm confused, as I see hundreds of listings for part FJ67 for $120 online. Am I missing something here? Let me know if i am overreacting. |

Find a new shop that isn’t intent on scamming you.
PS - send your injectors to Mr Injector. He will test & clean them. If they are truly leaking and aren’t worth cleaning he will not charge for them. |

wow....
Actual cost on FJ67s is less than 100 bucks a piece. 500 if they were talking the whole set maybe. Shops only installing parts they source is not uncommon, but those prices are out there. I don't have the factory book in front of me at this exact moment but I know even factory book time to replace 4 injectors was less than 2 hours. The elbows are an absolute non issue, even if you don't know 914s. Worst case replacing all the fuel lines in the engine bay at the same time with good German braded stuff you are still under 1000 bucks. |

And a no start condition from leaking injectors? Maybe a bad start. The fj67 are great
Even Mr injector thinks they are a fine replacement. |

I've had Bill at Mr Injector service hundreds of injectors for me. For what he charges, it's worth getting done if only for spares.
There are shops that charge big money for normal stuff and people open their wallets. That's fine if you have a big wallet and are ok with their work. There is a lot of stuff on our cars, like changing injectors, that can be done with very basic tools in very little time. I'm certainly no tech but I've changed out injectors and it was easy. Smart move going with the Tangerine products. No start issues are usually something simple. Air, fuel spark. |

Is it possible you misunderstood the per injector quote? Is it in writing? Strange.

I recently went through replacing all 4 injectors, the 4 injector rubber elbows (which I believe is what you’re referring to as “short hoses”), and all rubber lines in engine compartment. I had never done this work on any car including my 914. The FJ67s were about $125 each. The spool of correct high pressure fuel injection Barricade line was less than $100. While the 914 FI elbows are “out of stock” in most 914 online parts vendors there is an easy, inexpensive solution. Click on my profile name and search “member’s topics” to get those details and links. You can get 4 injector elbows for less than $20. Total time to install everything (with proper FI clamps) for a novice like me was about 4 hours. Someone who’s done it before, probably half that or less. Total amount spent for everything above less than $600 months total. Thus, that shop is trying to rob you blind. As others have suggested, send your injectors to Mr. Injectors for inspection, analysis, cleaning. Then go from there. I would find a 914 member near you to put the injectors and elbows on for the price of a case of beer or a nice bottle of wine. Plenty of fine folks here willing to help. I would help if you were near me. |

Not sure why people are saying the elbows are not available. These are the injectors that have been on my car for 5 years without a problem.

2.4 K$ is rediculous. Shop around dude. They're actually pretty easy to replace. Just don't smoke while you're doing it.

Going to a "professional" shop is the absolute last resort for doing anything on our cars. I was recently quoted $1,500.00 for a rear wheel only alignment and they were going to do it via the "string and jack stand" method. Took it home and did it myself for nothing- results 'perfect'.

They only use brand new parts that they source would sound better if the injectors were the problem. Not at that price of course. But I don’t see why they want to replace the injectors rather than fixing your car. |

I don’t know if my shop is well regarded but I wish that new parts were a guarantee of success. Unfortunately, it just means they are clean and shiny. There isn’t one new part that we buy for these engines that hasn’t come mis-sized, defective, broken or just wrong. Sometimes an original refurbished or restored part is the only acceptable solution. For example: we don’t use uro head temperature sensors because they suck. They cost about $100. We use real Porsche branded head temp sensors. They are around $300. So my tech installs one yesterday and it was working for a bit and then doesn’t. We know it’s the new sensor because when he installs a good used sensor, the car runs right. Sometimes throwing new parts at the problem isn’t the solution. Air, fuel and spark make the engine run. |

Hey all! Thank you all for the advice. A 914 world member is picking up the car and will be swapping in a spare distributor and FI setup.
Dodged a bullet - they tried to get us to swap to carbs TWICE! |
