It is the nicest example of an LE I have ever seen. And by far the most expensive restoration. This was a passion project (like most 914 resorations) Gauden invested more than $230,000 into this restoration as part of the Porsche Classic Restoration. It won the Regional Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge Championship and they have gone on to win 3 national titles. Steve Thiel and Dan Sheridan are 914 guys and got the opportunity to do everything right. The amazing part was how fast they did it in while still doing everything right.

I got a chance to look it over a few years back when it was at the Monterey Werks Reunion. Im the one that questioned the OG front spoiler in the comments as i remember it having the GRP replica . I would think that it would be key to getting max $$ for the car as it was a key feature of the LE.
Very nice car.
For obvious reasons, I'll be interested to see what the hammer falls at.

i think the hose has popped off the evap canister and its just fallen down there?
canister is in the engine bay in the 74s from nov 73 on.

its interesting to see there are a few minor "mistakes" with the resto.
funny thing is, guys on this website probably know more about the cars these days then even the factory does back in germany. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I could be wrong because it might be the lighting on the picture, but I don't think the headlight relay covers are correct either. They look black in the pic. They should be light gray.....I'll defer to the gurus, but I don't think this was just paint.... I think it was either molded black plastic or molded gray...

yeah, the 74s went grey from 01/74 to 04/74.
this covers the period pretty much when the LEs came off the line.

there are other subtle changes to the cars during the period of production nov 73 to june 74 which occur at different points along the way over that time span. we tracked them for the 1.8s. i am not sure how it would affect the LEs as i have not compared production dates for LEs alongside the changes i tracked in the 18s.

when it comes to 74 2.0L cars there are basically two types of 2.0s for 74.
there is a batch from aug to late oct 73 which in many ways are very close to 73 2.0s.
not exactly like 73s but close. then production starts on the 1.8 L jets in late oct 73 until early feb 74. during tihis period the factory seems to punch out only 1.8s from the line. not 100% on that but all indications are that was the case. then from feb 74 on they start producing 2.0 L cars again and the line is mixed production of both types of cars. 1.8s and 2.0s.

this second lot of 2.0s have all the changes that updated the 1.8s between late oct 73 and feb 74 and as the year progresses both types incorporate further updates.
so this second lot of 2.0L cars are distinctly different from the first lot of 2.0L cars from late 73. All the LEs are in that second batching of 2.0L cars. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

point being if you are restoring an LE you would be mistaken to assume some things as being correct for 2.0L cars from 74 MY. its a bit more nuanced than people think.
i don't know how accurate johnson's last edition of restorers guide is as i don't have a copy but i would not be surprised if it contained some errors as a lot of what we discovered only came to light with our research into the 1.8L cars.

@JeffBowlsby would have his head around most of the changes in the early to later LE cars.
these changes would co-inide with the same changes (updates) in the 1.8s.

this list is off the top of my head.
they changed the carpets in the cars in 74.
went from whats called hair yarn (has that white thread in it like fuzz) to mottled carpets. co-incides with start of production of VW siroccos at karmann plant.

they change headlight motor covers from black to grey and back to black again.

they change one of the air box blower hoses in font trunk from cardboard to plastic.
one on each side of blower housing closest to housing to plastic. the other half after the mixing valve stays cardboard.

they change the sun visor pins from metal to plastic.

they change the expansion tank on fuel tank to plastic.

they may have changed the engine back pad material at different times to different suppliers. this one is hard to verify and pin point.

they changed windscreen suppliers from kinonglas to sigla and back to kinon glas.
this definitely occurs for specific periods of production.

they change the location of the evap canister and update its plumbing.

they randomly have white screw drivers and black screwdriver handles in the tool kits.

they change the way the door handles and dorr bins are coloured to match interior color to them all being just black.

and there are a few other things that are there that i can't think of immediately right now. we listed them all in the 1.8 L jet topic in the originality section.

i would bet any changes jeff has tracked in LEs would match the changes and dates we tracked in the 1.8s.

so i guess if you were fanatical about a dead accurate restoration you gotta get your head around the idea that even the LEs may not be all the same exactly from start to finish.
