Hello guys!

I am in the process of changing my 3 ports fuel pump to 2 ports. My 2nd (since my ownership) 3 ports pump is intermittently giving up. I have checked connections, relay and ground wires but it still likes to cut off sometimes. I think it is a fuel pump because it always happens at steady speed. So I am changing it to a new 2 port pump at the firewall near the original location.

I unplugged the white(already discolored as everyone knows) connector and am looking at the electrical terminals. There are 2 and sizes are slightly different. I think the one that is connected to a brown wire should be negative and the other one should be +. But the 2 wires at the connector are almost the same color because of their age.

Which one is the negative, bigger terminal or smaller terminal?

I can test with a multi meter but that can be useful only if I have a helper here.

Thanks in advance for the inputs,

where is the fuel pump?

Original or in front?

Did you check the fuse in the relay plate?

Picture?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

It's a 74 and the pump is still located in its original position. I will install the new pump near the original location but it will be shifted from the hell hell area. The 2 port pump is too big to be on the corner.

I have checked the fuse and cleaned the contact at the relay board. But the problem still persists.

I will take some photos tomorrow.

First, since you mentioned the plastic connector I am assuming your fuel pump is still back in the engine bay? Hopefully as part of this process you are relocating the 2 port under the tank. Vapor lock can look like intermittent pump failure.

Second, LOTS of (maybe even most) intermittent pump failures are caused by the 50 year old crimps in the relay board itself. There are several and any one of them can cause the pump to not run, usually triggered by heat cycling. If you want reliability you will need to solder all these connections.
