Is this the correct assembly of the shift rod to bellcrank on a 914-6 with tail shift transaxle? Based on the parts catalog, I don’t see that I’m missing anything. It seems like there is an excessive amount of play to me. I do have the friction ring installed in the support bracket, but it's got some wiggle room too. Maybe this is the crux of the sloppy tail shift experience I've read about?

It is hard to find any photos of this without the protection cap installed. I didn't take the car apart, so I don't have any reference of my own.

Anyone out there with a tail shift that can confirm or clarify? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Dennis,

@DennisV - This is the best I have of my car, as bought, with the tail-shifter. Hope they help. Cheers, Michael (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Thanks Michael. That is helpful. It doesn't appear I'm missing anything. Your white bushing, in the bracket around the rod, might be tighter than the black one I have. It would not hurt to for me to replace that. Thank you!

Dennis....yes you have it correct for the 6...
the 914-6 tail shifter is way better than the 914-4 tail shifter....it's a whole lot better and more precise engaging gears....with the 4 at its best it's still a hunt and stir....the main difference the 6 had over the 4 tail shifter was the firewall connection for the shift rods...the 4 connection was crazy with that ball thing...the 6 is just a simple "U" joint ....then of course the side shifter is that much better than the 6 or 4....yes there is a little bit of play with the 6 but the 901 trans likes that little bit of lag as the syncros engage....
It's so much fun to watch your progress....thanks for sharing your journey

Thanks.

The fork looks a bit low around the ball. Make sure there is not a worn area on the shift rod where it goes thru the bushing. There also should be very little play/clearance with the shift rod inside the bearing.
Let me see if I can get some pictures of mine.

Dennis, every time I see what you are accomplishing with your car makes me feel guilty about how little I have done on mine over the past 30+ years. So at least I can take some pictures. Here is what mine looks like and for the most part it shifts great (I suspect the bushing under the shifter in the cabin is about shot).

It almost looks like the whole bracket is sitting a little low.Attached Image Attached ImageAttached ImageAttached Image

I agree that a 6 shifrer is better than that of a a four.
Add a short shifter...you'll be surprised
I'm happy with mine and I have all the necessary bits to convert to
side shifter on hand.
Try a short shift kit first.

Thanks for that link. Very educational.

This brings up a related question. What is the install procedure for the transmission, shift rod, and shifter? I am not chasing a problem like ctc911ctc, just reassembling. Are there some items that require specific alignment between the shift knob and the path to the bellcrank? I didn't take this thing apart, so I don't have anything marked or before photographs to reference.

I have a freshly rebuilt transaxle from CMS. I've replaced high wear items around the shifter and shift rod. Added Swepco 201 per CMS recommendation. Otherwise just bolted stuff back together referencing the parts catalog.

I'm not finding much that's useful in the Group 1 Engine / Clutch or Group 3 Transmission sections of the workshop manual.
