Ok, for those of you who have put a 915 in your 914, what are the linkage requirements? Does it just magically connect to the same 901 linkage? I didn’t think so…

What do I need? Currently running the JWest shifter for the 901.

Been there done that...
I reached out to JWest and converted my 901 Rennshift to a 915 Rennshift. I originally made my own shift rod with two Apex joints. PMS said it was too wimpy, so I ended up with their shift rod. I am running the Martin Bott 916 kit. If your kit is a wevo, it is a totally different animal. It is a lot of work but worth it.
Check out this link for pictures of the home made shift rods. Otherwise pay the bucks and buy all the plug and play stuff from PMS.

This page is from one of the PMS builds, mine is identical, except for MSDS 1 3/4" headers for my 3.6.

Many moons ago i helped Brad adding a custom cable shift solution to a 915 in a 914.

It worked surprisingly well and costs a fraction of the side-shift kits available.

I have a 915 that was meant to go with the 3.6L engine but i never got around using it.
The plan was to do the same thing and go cable shift.

I’m building two Martin Bott 916 kits right now. I figured I’d get to the shift rod issue when I get done the trans.
I need to sell my 915 with the Wevo kit.

Weird to think that there are maybe only a handful of us that know who you mean when you say you helped “Brad.” (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Our plan (Mark) was a cable shifter set up. Glad to hear it worked well.

I am happy with my 915/916 conversion. It also has the cool 916 history to it, but money wise it seems a Boxster S or Cayman S six speed would make more sense.
The 915 is a little balky to shift, but you get used to it.

I have the same setup as Steve. Carrera 915 with the Bott 916 kit and all of the PMS shift linkage. I'm going to use the JWest shifter as well. All still waiting to get installed so no real world experience on how it all works. PMS did the Bott 916 conversion several years ago. It was not cheap then so I can't imagine what it would cost today.

The kit cost $5500-6k depending on which one you need. Add $1k for tarrifs. A core 915 trans is about $4k and then 5-7k to rebuild and install the kit. Another 2k for LSD and $x to install in the car.

Round numbers. I’m probably a bit less. PMS is probably more. There’s no way to do it cheap. Just like when we bought engines years ago for single digits.

I did just buy the Martin Bott kits so they are real world numbers, not just make believe. Martin won’t ship the kit until you send him the core parts from the 915 trans so it’s a bit of a commitment to get started.

I don't doubt the numbers, just can't believe what this stuff costs these days.

I’m glad I did the 916 trans when I did. I probably have around $10k in my trans. It was awesome to have a matching trans to my 3.2 and even better with the 3.6.

Cable shift is still in business, but I don’t know if anyone still makes the rear mount for a 914.

I noticed PMS also sells the cable shifters. Curious if they sell the rear mount.

To the best of my knowledge, PMS stopped selling the cable shift for the 915 conversion cars. Years ago I bought one new from a pelican member. Tried it out on a test stand. It was a joke. Sold it. There’s a reason nobody uses them. If anyone here has a working example, I’ll be shocked and surprised.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) too funny Mark!! I have been around 914’s since the late 70’s and have never seen a cable shift 915. Only wevo, velios and factory 916 or factory 916 replica.. Vellios past away and too small of a market for wevo to make new molds, so that leaves the 916 kit by either Martin Bott or the other firm in Switzerland. I thought they were the UK, but the link says Switzerland.

I had the cable shifter and a PMS tubular transmission mount. It wasn’t even close to working so I ditched it all.

Jaide Car Co. or very early Rengade also had an adapter mechanism which attached to the tail shifter of the 915 transaxle. I discovered it in my shop racks the other day while re-arranging shop stuff.
Picture coming in a day or two.
Looks like when installed, the mechanism would sit 10" past the license plate (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

That was another challenge with the cable shift. I didn’t really want independent mufflers.
The Martin Bott kit is really pricey but if you want the equivalent of a 914 side shift trans, it’s really the best way to go.

I’m custom gearing both the 915 trans in my 67 and my 914. Peter Dawe told me it’s the best performance upgrade you can make on a car. We’ve done it on a couple customers cars and it’s true. It takes the whole driving experience to another level. It doesn’t sound like it should but having the right gear for every shift is amazing.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I had PMS go through my 916 trans, the previous two well known Porsche shops in so cal, could not figure it out. The car now shifts better than my 901 trans ever did. I just finished my second autocross with it. What a blast with the 3.6. But... I am curious if the Boxster S / Caymen S six speed kit would be a better option now for bigger motors.

I don’t know. I’ve never done one. A buddy of mine does sell a conversion kit to put a 996 trans behind a 3.6. Tyler at top tuning. https://www.topperformancetuning.com/shop
