I've got a set of very weathered Pedrinis on my 14. Setting aside, for now, the obvious way to improve their appearance (5-lug conversion, duh), can I get any suggestions on refinishing?
Powdercoat -- cheap (~$75/wheel), durable, attractive, but there is some speculation that the baking process might affect the strength of the alloy Paint -- probably the best way to duplicate the factory finish, but surprisingly expensive (~$150/wheel), and of dubious durability Polish -- don't know about expense (maybe the same as powdercoat?), looks good initially, but requires continual attention Thoughts, vendors, other options? Thanks in advance. |

Al and Diane can do pretty much whatever you want. Or certainly everything on your list. Give 'em a call.

i decided to sandblast and polish my set of mahles. they look great, but i do not recommend it, have someone else do it. even with a dremel contour sander it takes 8-10 hours per wheel. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

Refinished my Mahles in the garage with the paint kit from Griot's Garage and it turned out perfectly, though I'm certainly not a genius with a spray can. Has held up for 2 years in Michigan and still looks good. Just scuffed them with 400 grit, blew the dust off and started painting.

Dave:I powder coated my Mahles last yr. I really like it ,cleans with soap and water back to like new every time. Don"t have to worry about stone chips. Gets my vote. Dave (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/slap.gif) |

if you plan on converting to 5-lug down the road, I'd do a cheap, easy refinish of the wheels since it'll be difficult to recoup the money spent if you do a finish or color that others might not like.........silver paint or your favorite color seems to be the best method...it's easy to remove once you sell the rims if the new owner wishes to re-do the finish....

If you have some $$$ and are not in a big hurry, you can't go wrong with Weidman's Wheels. George Weidman is a real perfectionist and does great work.

media blast with plastic. The matte finish is really nice by itself. Around $25 per wheel.

Maybe I should have clarified that the $150 quote was given to me by Wheel Enhancement. I understand that a DIY approach would be significantly less expensive. But since you mentioned bead-blasting, what vendor do you use for your bead-blasting? |

I have heard that aluminum can become brittle if heated to 410 degrees. I don't know about other alloys, but FWIW, I do know there are some low-temp powder coats that don't have to get nearly that hot.

I sent mine to Al Reed. It was awhile back, but I think he charged something like 75 a piece? Not sure, but they turned out amazing.
