I have an engine sitting at a loading dock, it was just built.

I don't know if the cam has even been through a break-in, and I don't think the builder is going to clue me in.

(he called me a mother fucking asshole, and told me he hopes it blows up like the last one)

Anyone want to list break-in procedures?

The gas tank is ruined, anyone have a (cheap) decent one in the south-east I could buy? You would think a nice one would have come with the car for that much..

Thank you,

Miles

3000 rpm for 30 minutes - by the clock.

no super-slippy oils; i don't think non-detergent oil is necessary, maybe just something like Valvoline straight-30 Racing oil. we had a thread here a couple of days ago on non-detergent oil if you want to go that way...

change oil and filter after 30 minutes; do whatever adjusting/tightening is appropriate.

i have a spare 8-gal cylindrical VW "dune buggy" tank, nothing OEM sorry.

I don't think I'll be mentioning the builder's name, I am not going to go there. Everybody, loves somebody, sometimes. Goes both ways.

Thanks Rich, it was me asking about the oil couple days back, I anticipated the moment I'd need it, @ 3am, on a Sunday morning..

To all you geniuses, and gurus out there:

You ain't all that.

To all you guys who have been teening forever, and finally want the best one:

Do it yourself, or keep on dreaming.

Karl, you are my idol. I hate you.

OH~!

One more question:

RING SEATING; Redline Clutch Dumps, or Long Hot Slow Time?

Really I do.

Now the break in proceedure is- Run the engine at 6000 rpm for 3 hours. Blipping it up to 7000 every 15 minutes. Good luck. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

Hi,

Here is my plan
engine break in

I'd take a look at the lifters before i fired it up. See if they look like the suspects on the STF thread.

I'm not in the SE, but do have a tank. PM me if your need is dire.

Break-in oil...

DIESEL MOTOR OIL. Stop by the local FLAPS and pick up a bottle of Shell Rotella T or Mobil Devlac 30wt for break-in. More zinc content in Diesel motor oil than the regular stuff.

Seating the rings. Get a good load on the motor (Hmm, 4th gear maybe?), low-ish RPM's, then mash the gas. Let it build up near redline (but not *that* close to it).

Once the rings are seated and you've drained the oil - check the valves and make sure they aren't getting loose or anything.

Fill up with some fresh oil, maybe do a few more ring seats and let the motor settle. Just regular driving and get on it here and there.

After that, change the oil again. Maybe stick some 15-40 in it and then let it rip. If it hasn't broken by now, it probably won't.

Yank one of the lifters, see what it looks like.

If it's like this, don't run the damned thing...

Paul

Sure, you have a gas tank, what's left of your car is held together by it's relative gravity.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/finger.gif)

I just ran it @ 6 grand for 6 minutes, and blipped 7k once, now it won't crank?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

Thanks fellas, I got some learnin' to do.

I'd love to see the lifters, but I don't think I have the grease that plan rides on... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

If it blows up, I am going to part out the car with a huge fully automatic weapon, and sell videos, with a big windshield banner...

I wish I had those trick lifters.. damnit.

Nah, I like the "Ah-Shit" ones... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

But, she runs like a champ now, I'd adjust the valves - If I had too!!!! LOL. Just slip the feeler gauge in and believe it or not, they're right where I left them!

Kinda like that - I also like the fact that Griznant's ceramic lifter equip'd motor does the same thing.

And, as you know, we baby these cars.... NOT!!!

WOT @ 5500rpm in top gear... In G's 912. I've wrapped the speedo around so far in the Bug it's not even worth looking at anymore!!!

Later,
Tom

I have the tank in the garage attic. I can get it down and take a picture of it this weekend.

Or I can leave it up there.

2 responses:

1. HAH! You'd stop at nothing! Taking pictures to taunt, and sealing my mental undoing!

2. You don't need to take pictures, I am going to look for a local fix in teh morning, and if that doesn't pan out, I'll PM ya..

Thanks for the offer.

Now, back to the motor, it's still really hot, how long into the 6k run do you add the oil?

I forgot to mention the part about him saying he should get on a plane, and come pay me a visit.

You know? Maybe I can sleep better now that I got that off my chest, maybe not.
