Fellas:
I've gotten some interest in my Bursch muffler I have for sale, but everyone interested asks about a Bursch P/N starting with a BX prefix. I've looked all over this thing and I cannot find any number with a BX prefix anywhere. The only number I can find is: 80065195. It is in raised numbering stamped right in the muffler metal. There is a white label which reads "73-74 914" There is no resonator or catalytic converter either, just pipes and the muffler. I can't even determine if this is for a 2.0L. Here's a link to some pics of the muffler if you wanted to take a look: http://my.execpc.com/~andyz/MyPhotos Can you guys help? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) Thanks!! Andy... |

Andy,
Paul Heery can answer this for you quickly. He told me of the differences between the 2.0 and others, but I can't remember which was which. |

The bolt spacing on the flanges. 2.0 is wider than 1.7/1.8. I can measure a 1.7/1.8 tomorrow.

Its hard to see the bolt spacing difference. Otherwise they are identical.

QUOTE(Brad Roberts @ Sep 5 2003, 12:07 AM) Its hard to see the bolt spacing difference. Otherwise they are identical. Not really identical but close. Because of the way the 1.7 HEs turn up at the end, the flange on the 1.7 Bursch is actually closer to the muffler than the 2.0 Bursch. It's difficult to tell from your pictures, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that you've got a Bursch exhaust for a later 1.7 there (BX1413). The distance from flange to muffler on a 2.0 is just over 3 inches. If it is less, it's not for a 2.0. Also, here are the outside flange measurements for a 2.0 Bursch. Cool. I just noticed how to "see" them apart from each other. The secondary tube coming out of the "Y" is different for cylinders 1-2/3-4 They flip the tubes on the 1.7/1.8

The top tube in the "Y" comes from cylinder one on the 1.7/1.8
On the 2.0 cylinder one is on the bottom "Y". When everything is upside down... DOH! B |

Look at the flange on the left in the pictures.
On the 2.0, the inside tube goes up. On the 1.7, the inside tube goes down. |

Cylinders 1/2 are flipped onto different Y's depending on 1.7/1.8 or 2.0

Do you mean the tube position on the flange is reversed from the two different exhausts? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

YES.
I have been looking for ways to "see" the difference without measuring every setup I see at swap meets. It took seeing pics side by side before I noticed a physical NONE measured difference. Thanks Paul. B |

Easier to see if you look at the entire exhaust.
