I think it would be way cool to find my 914's original owner (or any of its previous owners) and give them a call, and drive over and say hello. I'd really like to do that someday, you know? The only p.o. that I know of is the young guy from Portland who sold it to me earlier this year, and he said that he bought it a year earlier in Seattle... but he didn't keep the bill of sale or anything, so there is no trail for me to follow.

Has anyone on this forum ever succeeded in finding a car's previous owners through the DOL or DMV? Does the Porsche factory have a file with the original purchaser's name? Any helpful ideas on how to find previous or original owners would be very.. helpful (a gratuitous allusion to Graham Chapman in Monty Python and the Holy Grail). If it is a 6, there is a guy who was able to tell me the person who owned it in 1978.

914/6 registery

It would be great to find the paper trail!

You could try your DVM and search the serial number....if it came from out of state, you would have to search several states.

I have the original dealers manuel...has the first owners name in it and I found her phone number on the net.

You can look under the tray, or under the carpet behind the seats, and call numbers on the business cards they left there.

Don't call the numbers on official papers, like parking ticket people, they don't care who owned it, but they do remember that car..

Funny someone mentioning tracking previous owners. I had to do that on a porsche I bought back in 91. When the original owner found out that she still owned the car, she was kind of furious to find out that the car changed hands about 2 times and wrecked in her name about 2 times.

Redshift,
I couldn't find any old papers on mine, but I did find some unused 9mm bullets behind the seats.

I bought mine from a guy in Minn. he owned it for a yr. He got from a guy in San Antonio, I found his name on a title found in the pocket of the center console coushion. I tryed to contact him for 9 mon. by phone and land mail twice with know responce. Even had a guy in San Antonio try to contact him. He must have been hideing from the F.B.I. or someone.
My 914 had extencive restoration work done in 1996. 1st P.O. gave me a copy of the work order with the company name on it. I called them and got in touch with them on the LAST day they were in bussness. Not only did he remember the car he gave me the full history on the car and the restoration. Last thing we said was " I still have the pictures of the work we did would you be interested in them"
Well guess what my ans. was. so just work on it and there is know telling what you will find.
Thanks Dave (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wavey.gif)

I looked in the back of my owner's manual (my '74 orange car) and found the person online.

They were tickled when I called...

First thing they said...

"Man, I loved that car. I wish I never sold it".

Ha ha! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mueba.gif)
