HEy there, I have a question about the original streel wheels sold with the 914 pre '74.
For the later mag look I know that the backspacing number is ET40; ET40 = 914; Anything else is VW specific - I think for a standard VW wheel it would be ET26 but I haven't been able to totally confirm it. I'm about ready to just start looking at them parked on the street (so many around here...) to see. I'll let you know, but that's what I'm looking at so far for info. If anyone has the EARLY steel wheels that are not the mag look I would be interested to know what the ET number is on them or what the backspacing is. Thanks! |

Yeah, in my searches via google I found like one real reference and it said that VW stock was ET26. The 914 "mag look" steel wheels have an ET40 and what I want to know is if the early steel wheels with hub caps had an ET of 26 or 40.

There were actually a bunch of VW wheels with different offsets. Here's what I have for VW/Porsche wheels. Would be happy for feedback with more wheel part numbers:

Gary, thanks for the info
5 1/2Jx15 ET-34 Sport Wheel promo packs Style of sport wheel used on 914 Porsches Seeing these are they the wheels that would take the dome style hub caps? I know that my "mag look" steel wheel spare has an ET printed on it of 40 and that isn't in your list. it's 5 1/2" X15 ET 40, I'll look for a part number tomorrow. |

Mike,
I had a set of the steel wheels on my '75. I sold them when I went to 6X16s all around. Wish now I had checked the ET. I suspect the super beetle and 914 wheels were the same style, but different offsets. If you get the P/N, let me know and I'll add it to my list. |

Where do you find the numbers? Are they on the inside of the rim, like the Fuch's? I just checked the spare tire on my sons 70 and couldn't find any #'s on it. All I could see is a couple of T's stamped near the boalt holes (face side).
The steel rims that came on the 72 are up at the farm and I will check next time I'm up there. |

here's a pic of mine
I guess the original VW style didn't have much on the way of markings. I measured the back space on this one and it was 4 5/8" just like a fuch. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |
