To get this topic off of my Project Progress thread....

I hate people that spell their name Karl with a C. It's people like YOU that make it difficult for ME to give my name to someone. Just kidding.

Can I have your name please?

Yes, it's Karl - with a K

They already have C written down. Ugh!

For a while, I tried saying "with a K, Karl" but then they get all confused.

Or I say... "Yes.. it's K-A-R-L." And then they act like I'm treating them like a kindergartner.

what the hell, i'll join in. i have actually been thinking about this on and off today since CARL's thread got hijacked.

history: both sides of the family came through ellis island one side from italy and one from sicily

mafia: the bonanno crime family is still active in new york although my ancestors came from siracusa and the legendary joe bonanno came from Castellammare Del Golfo

translation: bon anno= good year

nicknames (just a few (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ):
banana
bonanza
banana man
bandeho (read pendejo)
joey bananas (my college days)
doctor joey (post college)
boneman
boner-anno (my personal favorite)
etc...

although jeff is pretty inocuous - here is a ditty i heard one time:

hey ladee ladee ladee
hey ladee ladee lo

i knew this guy his name was jeff
hey ladee ladee lo
he beat off till he went deaf
hey ladee ladee lo

i almost pissed my pants - a successful mutilation of my FIRST name!

My last name is Arbuthnot, that's R BUTH NOT, with a lisp in the middle, not R BUT NO. Nice thing about my name, I can always tell when a magazine has sold my name to someone else, it's always spelled wrong. And you're right about the telemarketers, ain't nobody here by that name (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Even my first name of Joan (that's one syllable - JONE), many say Joanne or even, how do you spell that?

lol this thread is making me feel better already.

There's a street sign in the next town that totally pissed me off about people and their lack of spelling skills.

JENIFFER Street How does this shit get all the way through a municipal system and onto the top of a pole for everyone to see?

This is why I go by "URY914"
My last name is "Woodbury"
Not Woodberry
Not Woodbery
There are towns in CT, NY, NJ all named Woodbury.
There use to be a soap named Woodbury. And my Dad would say, "Like the soap".
It is Woodbury, and I spell out "u-r-y" every time.
Or is it "you-are-why"?

They mostly get "Paul" right.

I know a gril named "Porita" pronounced "Porscha". Now people really had trouble with that one. I thought it was cool, but my wife wouldn't let me name our girl that.

Bah! My last name is Neff-Hoehne, Neff is my given name and Hoehne is my adopted name (was adopted at age 18, and I decided to keep both names).

At any rate I thought when I was younger Neff was tough not to say but tough to spell it to someone, jeff, ness. That was nothing compared to the butchery I get with Hoehne. It is pronounced "Haney" Spelling it is always fun as everyone gets messed up by the time you hit the last e.

I had Bought a 82 500SL from my parents about 10 years ago, it had a personalized plate of "HOEHNE" I was driving through Kirkland with the top off and I can hear some girls to the left and behind me in another car attempting to figure out how to say it. They pull up alongside me and ask "What does that say? Hon, Honee". Naturally my response was "Yeah, me so Honee!" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

It's truly amazing. Jenny. People automatically assume it's Genie. I always get asked "with a G?" No, dumbass. With a J, just like everyone else. "NNIE?" No! Just Jenny. "With one N?" In hawaii, when putting my name on a list to be seated, I said Jenny. The girl goes "J?" and I said yeah, assuming she was asking whether it's with a G or a J. Sure as shit, about 5 minutes later, some waitress strolls thru asking for a "J, party of two...." it does on...

Last name is Shyu. Pronounced like shoe. I get shy-you a lot. or shoe aye ou. Whenever I spell it out for someone, I look and it's almost always shuyu. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fighting19.gif)

When telemarketers call and ask if they can speak to Miss Shy-You, I always say no. They ask why not. I tell them because it's pronounced shoe. Then they want to speak to miss shoe. I still say no. Why? Because you can't pronounce my name right. I'll humor the ones that can say my last name correctly.

I got one better.

Last time my two-year old Niece was at my place a Telemarketer called just in time for dinner. I handed the phone off to her. I'm sure they had a nice conversation all about Scooby-doo. Last name is Napier......prounounced Na-Pier. It's Scotish. Family lore is that the name was give to some ancestor who had Nae Peer in battle. (No one better) Visions of hairy Scotsmen running around with huge swords, cutting off peoples heads.

I get: Mr. Naper a lot. Napkin when I was a kid (till I got a big sword) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

My Grandfather came over here (Canada) to homestead in about 1906 and settled where the farm is now. Moved to Chicago during the Roaring Twentys, where my dad was born and came back here when the depression set in. They could grow food to feed themselfs and fish the lake.

Newspaper Telemarketers...I always tell them I'd love to take their paper/magazine's and then ask them if they make a brail edition.

Okay... besides the Carl vs. Karl thing... I have this problem.

If someone can't remember my name and they have to think about it... they come up with Mark.

I answer to Mark as well as Karl because ever since I can remember, people remember Mark instead of Karl.

The only thing I can think of is that Mark and Karl share three letters, a,r,k.

Or.. maybe it has to do with Karl Marx... I don't know.

I wonder if the Carl with a -C- on this board is ever called Mark.... or Marc...

Craig, I find it very hard to believe anyone calls you Mr. Mc Laughlin. I would believe Mr. McGlaughlan though. Yes, I know it's a long name and is only really pronounced correctly if spoken in a gaelic accent or broken up, but Laughlin, O'Laughlin and McLaughlin never had a 'G' at the beginning. Even if I spell my name for them, they usually try to add a G after Mc or an 'a' toward the end.

James Adams. I have a question for you. How often is the "s" dropped off the end of your last name?

I ask this because my step-father's name was Douglas Adam (NO "S"), People always added the "s". If they got Adam correct, it's because they would switch the order to Mr. Adam Douglas. People just need to pay more attention. BTW, my uncle's name is James (Jimmy or Jim) Adam.
