If your tranny is feeling its age, grinding, and popping out of gear I have the solution for you! If you have checked the other, outside of the tranny causes for these symptoms and found them to be ok then your tranny may be in need of a rebuild.

Some outside of the tranny causes for some of your shifting woes:

-Shifter bushings along the shift rod
-Cone set screws
-Tranny cable adjustment, shifter adjustment
-Clutch, TO bearing, pressure plate
-Engine and tranny mounts

So, you have checked all of the above and it is still not working as it should. What do you do!?

I have a great stock of excellent used internal parts for much less than new with no loss in performance, as well as new, if you are interested. I have many different gear sets. I highly recommend all new main bearings; input shaft (x2), pinion shaft (x2) and differential (x2). I stock these bearing set at far less than retail.

How to remove the stack from you tranny out of the car:

Step 1. Remove the shift console and the reverse switch with its pin

Step 2. Remove tail cone. Be ready for the reverse gear and its little bearings to fall out. You should now be looking at the business end of the tranny gear stack.

Step 3. Select 5th gear by taking a socket extension and pushing in the 4th/5th shift rod. Its ok to use a hammer, just dont beat the hell out of it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

You can now remove your gear stack by lifting at the intermediate plate.

***NOTE***
When you remove the intermediate plate you will have some gaskets between it and the case. These are of a particular thickness and need to be replaced with the same to keep the pinion shaft depth the same. Use a micrometer to measure the thickness of these (usually more than one) and keep that number handy. When you reinstall you need to measure the gaskets that come with the new kit and replace with ones that are of the same thickness.

So, now you have recieved your rebuilt gear stack and you are very happy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) How do you reinstall it?

Like so:

Step 1. Select 5th gear on your gear stack.

Step 2. Place the correct thickness of gaskets on the tranny case rear.

Step 3. Place the case on blocks leaving extra room under the center for the drive shaft as it sticks out farther than the bell housing. Allign the stack, intermediate plate and drive shaft in the case and lower into position. Be careful of the output seal for the drive shaft. Make sure the drive shaft moves through it with out catching the lip and causing the spring inside it to come out.

Step 4. Once the stack is installed, reassemble the 1st/rev gear stuff (make sure the flat needle bearing is UNDER the gear on the intermediate plate side!). Now put the tail cone back on.

Step 5. It is now time to put the tranny back into the neutral. In the first pic you can see the shift rod notches are off center. Take a screwdriver and push the 5th/4th shift rod so it is centered. It should look like the second pic.

Step 6. Once in neutral, put the shift console back in. The shift console only gets the O-ring. The gasket that comes with the seal kit is for the plug of the tail shifter that goes there, not for the side shifter console so don't use it.

Step 7. Reinstall the reverse pin and switch.


Install the tranny and enjoy!

that looks great...i just got my sideshift..now i gotta start saving again

do you have any need for used parts or a case or anything, i have a partially dissasembled tailshift...dunno if/what kind of used parts you might use

how much for a rebuild of a stock tranny and also install limited slip or Quaff? Have several Trans but not limited slip. Live near Cumberland, MD

whats the best shipping from mid oklahoma for a full transmission?

i dunno whats wrong exactly, but cars not drivable.

driving it kind of hard (after a clutch disc pressureplate and thowout replacement) and i get this loud CRACK and now the car rumbles when in gear and has no power to the wheels.

Hey man, let me try to save you some money. If you have a "CRACK" and now nothing goes then your box may be done for as you may have just put a bunch of metal pieces through your diff. It may be in you rbest interest both money and shipping wise to pull the stack out as per my instrucitons and look at the teeth on your pinion and your differential. If they are gauled you would do better to have me get you a core tranny down here and rebuild it. A core would only run you about $75 over what shipping yours to me would cost. I have shipping instructions in teh first post. Coast to coast on GreyHound is about $70 so you should be a littl eless since you are closer. If you want to talk in more detail about this, feel free to PM or email me.

Dear Dr. evil,

I have a '74 914. It has a 2.0L motor and the trans keeps popping out of 2nd gear. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) I followed all your previous advice of things to try before calling you. Dear Doctor,

I have a souped-up 3.0 SC engine mated to a side-shifter 901 with a ZF LSD. Now for the bad news:
- 2nd and 3rd grind if shifting occurs anywhere near top RPM's; oh, if I wait > 2 seconds they don't, but by then I'm doing 3 Mph
- 1st and reverse grind when engaging from idle after holding the clutch down for < 3 seconds; this one I can live with, and provide FYI

I'm a complete mechanical ignoramus, with no hope for reformation any time soon. Can you help me? What happens if surgery reveals terminal condition in there? Can you source parts, etc.? $500 all going well, really?
