Was curious how much I should spend on a used WRX EJ20? There is one for sale for 750.00 with ECU, wiring harness and everything BUT no tranny. It might need a rebuild also. What should this cost me, or should I just buy one that is ready to go?

it depends on what you want...if you're a bottomless pit of money then I'd go to gruppe-s.com and get either an sti shortblock and build it or get a prebuilt race 2.5...or my personal favorite the ej207 which came out of the version 7 sti in Japan (a used one...they're currently out of stock) the ej207 is a 2 liter twin-scroll turbo with forged pistons and AVCS...probably the best engine that subaru has made but it will deliever monster power if you tune it (instant boost too)...
or try and find a regular ej20t which is what I have on my '02 wrx...they are just harder to find because of every single 2.5rs owner wanting to do an ej20t turbo swap in their cars...but it's probably the cheapest way to go...and if you don't want turbo...just pick up one of the 2.5rs guys' engines go to nasioc.com and look through the classifieds or search the site for threads with engines for sale the ej207 is what I'm go to try and get but it's 3K for a complete engine (which does have less than a 1000km on the odometer) and you should probably pay atleast $1000 or more for a turbo engine hope this helps |

I payed $900 for my EJ25 (from a 2.5 RS) with complete wiring harness and ECU. It came with pretty much everything needed to run (alternator, all the FI stuff). Found the ad on TheSamba.com
Not sure about the EJ20s, but there are usually a few JDM Subaru engines on Ebay. -Tony |

the non-turbos will always run a little bit cheaper but they are no doubt really good engines...so if you want turbo you'll have to compete with all the swappers
also the JDM single turbo (ej20t) is on ebay for around 550 and the JDM twin turbo (ej20tt) is on ebay for around 550 and again for around 850 *this engine is a mess of plumbing though so I'd be cautious...it also does NOT fit any USDM imprezas because of the steering column and something else because of the second turbo...but it would probably fit a 914 with mods to the trunk so the turbos will fit (i.e. notching the trunk) the problem with these ebay motors that are imported is that they aren't 100%...they usually have about 40-60k miles on them and they cut the wiring harness to get them out which is retarded considering it's probably hard to find another and a PITA to reinstall |

This one is the EJ20T. It have everything with the exception of the tranny. If it needs a rebuild should I still pay 750 for it?

If it needs a rebuild should I still pay 750 for it? call a subaru specialist and find out how much $$$ to rebuild one....based on the prices for running motors on eBay and from the JDM importers, it seems silly to buy a motor that could be nothing more than a core for $750 unless you want the challange of rebuilding one...the plus side is that if you do have to rebuild it, you can upgrade the weaklinks (pistons, rods) to get serious more power out of it. |

I can't remember who I bought it from... It has been a while. However, I would call Mike at Renegade and ask him for Frank's number. Frnak is the man who Renegade buys the EJ20T's from. Another person I would call is Crawford performance 760-631-2927 ask for Quirt and tell him Keith Wilson with the 914 from Las Vegas sent you. My motor is a US spec. and I bought it before the Suby engine craze happened. From what I understand, they have gotten a little bit more expensive. |

THese guys are out here in Jersey. Specialize in building rally cars and especialy subarus. Something tells me they would have access to plenty of motors the way they crash em.

i payed $2k w/ no ecu or wiring harness...
$350 for the harness, and $600 for a stand alone ecu... To do it again, i would have given frank the $2500 he wanted up front. Be sure it's complete, the MAF/Inlet air temp sensor is in the airbox, and is major $$$$ seperate. (some standolones dont need it though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) BJH |

OK!
A subject that im totally into for, i think obvious reasons. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) EJ25 - normally aspirated motors that can be found out of anything from a 2.5 RS to a Outback. The years to look for would be 2000+. 98's were DOHC and were a nightmare on overheating. 99's a bit better, is when they went to the SOHC aka: Phase 2 motor. EJ205 - usdm wrx 2.0 motor. Every year of these is good. EJ255 - Turbo Forester and Baja motors. 2.5 liters. EJ257 - usdm wrx STi motor. 2.5 liter. AVCS and a few other goodies over the wrx. EJ207 - JDM STi motor. AVCS, sodium filled valves, bigger valves and an 8K redline! Can't quite remember the number for the new Legacy and Outback models. Might be a 255. I should just go outside and look. Personally, i would stay away from anything JDM just bc of parts availaility. USDM will get you just as much power and if something breaks, just go to your local subaru dealer and order parts. another option for not a crazy price would be to get a EJ257 block and put a set of heads on it. Virtually almost every head listed above will fit onto the motor without a problem, just get a head gasket set for the 257. I have done many swaps, none to a 914 just yet. EJ25 into a 95'L that was a 1.8 EJ20 into a 98' RS then put in a full EJ207 swap. EJ20 into a 98' Outback EJ20 into a 95' L EJ20 into a 01' RS EJ257 into 2 95' L's etc.etc.etc. check out my list l l l l V |

RS22b,

depends on where you have it rebuilt. There are alot of the guys on nasioc around that know what they are doing and repairing things like this in thier garage. I would say anywhere from $500 to $1500.
I do stuff like this out of my garage at home, but your best bet is to actually purchase something from a company like Groupe S that has a warranty possibly or another motor that actually doesnt have something wrong with it. Best bets to find something for sale are: Rallispec.com - good for importing brand new jdm STi motors. Eastcoastswappers.com or ECS.com i cant remember - great for used stuff on the full range of usdm. Groupe S is great for those out on the west coast for prob the same as above. Subaru dealers - They do sell complete brand new motors at the current time. If you are looking for a shortblock i believe they come with new oil pump, water pump timing belt tensioner, crank seal, oil pickup and oil pan. Trying to think of anything else that might be good for anything like that. I do have a freind that always has motors in stock usually right here in NJ. I have bought alot of stuff from him for my rally cars and swaps and dont usually use any of the above mentioned just bc he is alot more local and available when i need the parts. The above mentioned are great from what i have heard and know ppl that have used them for stuff before. also check out: http://www.importimageracing.com for all of your upgrading needs. had to plug one of my sponsors (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

SWEET! Although - could easily get a replacement motor for that money. What a delicious problem to have.... |
