Hi Gang, long time no see. The other day I was driving alon (minding my own business). I was stopped at a red light. As I began to pull away after the light changed, I heard a loud clunk, and, while the engine kept running, there was no drive. As I coasted into a parking lot, I looked in my mirror to see if I had left anything in the road - no. Anyways, The car now sits in the garage awaiting repair. Where should I begin. A cursory look didn't reveal anything obviously wrong. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Seems most likely to me that a CV joint has failed. If you start it up and pop it into gear while somone is looking (perhaps with eye protection) back there - It ought to be obvious that this is happenning. Don't do this for very long since you're only adding damaing to an NLA part.... Theres a crew on the board making new 914 CVs out of bug parts - so that would be the way to go for a replacement.

If it's not that then:
Could also be that you're not getting into gear?
Something gone in the transmission?
Clutch problem potentially?

I had the same thing happen to me once before. I'm willing to bet the bolts from one of the CV joints on the transmission loosened up and the axle fell onto the exhaust. Engine will still run fine, transmission will shift but you won't go anywhere.

Oh yeah. Be really careful if you fire it up, have it in gear and are looking under the car. I think I'd put it on jack stands before doing that. and leave the handbrake on. Anything rotating = dangerous to fingers, eyes, groins, hair, loose clothing... caveat emptor. Be safe first. And don't run yourself over.

Definitely CV joint. Move the axle back and forth w/the car in
neutral and jacked up (wheels dangling free). This happened to
me a couple years back. The guys making the modified cv's are in the link below:

Yes, CV or maybe a sheared roll pin in the linkage inside the tranny. Does it feel like is still shifts into gears?

Looks like this has happened to a lot of us. I was in Battle Creek MI 2 months ago and the same thing happened. My CV joing had worked it's way off. All the bolts were still there they just loosened themselves and the joint fell off the transmission. It was a good thing this happened at a low speed! I was lucky. Just as I pushed into a parking lot. I person pulled up and handed me his business card. His name is Jerry at Euroeast Porsche shop. He was only 1 minute away! Turned a real bad into a pretty good one. If this is the case with your car, I reccomend using new lock washers and maybe some locktite on the threads. There also needs to be a gasket installed.

We're working on a new CV solution. I just sent the kits to Mr. Mueller for a little re-working. Mr. Evil will also play into this as we have had quite a bit of interest in a Pro CV kit.

Hi Eric, All's well in MI, except that my car isn't running. Hopefully it's the CV's like everyone seems to think. I don't want to tear into the gearbox if I can avoid it. How's things in UT? Bob's good - Got married in February so he didn't attent the annual ski trip this year, which, by the way, was to Whistler, in BC. - awesome.
Headed to Lake Louise, in Alberta for 2007.

5 of the 8 CV bolts were loose, 3 on the drivers side and 2 on the pass. side. The drivers side CV appears to be toast. Took it off the tranny and it rained down bits of metal and ball bearings (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I guess the good news is I now know what happened and I'm not gonna need to drop the motor to fix it (right?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) )

You may have to drop the heat exchangers. Same thing happend to a friend. His left inboard CV fell off the tranny and whacked the gearshift rod. Good thing it did not hit the starter. After I towed the car to my place I found the one rear caliper piston had worn right through the backing plate and was wearing on the rotor.
