Now you've REALLY gotta wonder how well they hold up. Notice in Lou's pic that the seat bottom is still covered in plastic?

How well will wool hold up?
First- I'm pretty sure wool was what the original fabric used for the plaid inserts on the 914. Second- Wool is a premium fabric known for its good wear characteristics. It should hold up pretty well, better than most fabrics and best of the natural fabrics. I talked with upholsters. It was and still is used in high end vehicles. I doubt it will hold up as well as an automotive vinyl or leather though. But it wont sizzle your assets on a hot day either. And Toast always protect your assets My original plaid insert had been recovered long before I purchased the car (and the drivers side needed it). The inserts on the other car look good. It is the covering on the seat shell that is splitting but the inserts are not worn through.. So I would conclude the vinyl will last a lot longer (or that my second set of seats have been recovered). From my research I concluded: You either need to go with a very high weight and high dollar wool fabric. Or as Porsche did originally, go with a lighter weight wool and a thin layer of batting with another material for support (traditionally burlap). I plan to pull the seats this weekend so my upholsterer can start disassembling them to make a pattern. I will try and get some pictures. |

Thanks for the opinions and research guys. Going to have my mom recover them for me. I'm just doing the cusions right now. I would love to get the vinyl on my seats redone because I have some tears that are eye sores. But that will be with the next lottery winning. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
