it's been a while since i started this project. i had all the parts, but i was waiting for the right time to redo the complete rear suspension ...
yesterday, i went up to McMark's and we took out the old trailing arms and axles and shocks and prepared my new trailing arms and the axles. McMark finished the job today, and now i have: - new (unbend) trailing arms - new mueller roller bearings - new koni adjustable shocks - new axles with brand new 944 CVs (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) Andy PS: for the axles, i used, tranny to wheel: 915 (911, '75 - '79) coarse spline 6-bolt 100mm outputshafts -> 944 100mm CV -> modified 914 axle shaft -> 944 100mm CV -> 911 ('75 - '79) 6-bolt 100mm stub axle -> 911 ('69 - '73?) hub = real 5-lug! on top, the stock 914 axle, bottom, the new axle using 944 and 911 parts: and installed: |

the main benefits of doing this, IMHO:
- 944 CVs are still readily available brand new for reasonable prices. - 944 CVs are slightly bigger and wider than stock 914 CVs. - real 5-lug hubs instead of redrilled 914 hubs. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Andy |

not andy,
but you have to turn off a "bump/lip" on each end of the shaft where the stock dust boot sat iirc |

not andy, but you have to turn off a "bump/lip" on each end of the shaft where the stock dust boot sat iirc Nope. The 944 CVs are wider, so they need more room on the axle splines. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-11-1123464006.jpg) |

That is exactly what I did to 914-6 axle shafts to make 911 CV joints fit on them

What model and year did the stub axle and outputshafts come from?
Where is the 100mm measured on the stub axle? I have one large four bolt stub axle and one six bolt. Not sure or the origin. The outputshafts I have are from an '86 915 and are also four bolt. Thanks Eddie |

What model and year did the stub axle and outputshafts come from? 915 output flanges and 911 stub axle came from a mid to late '70s 911 (~'75 - '79) and the hubs came from a early 911 (~'69 - '73?) ... 100mm is the dia. of the CV, so the flages and stubbies fit a 100mm CV ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Andy PS: and yes, stubbies and flanges and CV's are all 6-bolt ... |

Actually, Mike they were about 0.25mm too short. Completely usable (IMHO), but visibly short. Not your fault, mostly Andy's. We need to buy that guy a digital caliper. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Very nice Andy. Have you had a failure in the past or was this a proactive move on your part?

Very nice Andy. Have you had a failure in the past or was this a proactive move on your part? I wanted real 5-lug in the rear, not re-drilled hubs. The slightly larger CVs were an added bonus. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
