George, please get a photo of the Karmann badge. These oddballs we really need to document. Please provide the VIN and date code also.

Speaking of oddballs... I think we talked about this in a thread a year ago, but here is my mismarked Karmann badge...

Attached Image

It is marked L63E (no such color?), but probably is L60E (Irish Green). PO had painted it a bronze color. I will be putting the car back to original color.

VIN: 4722916581 Manf date: 5/1972

Nice work Andy,

I have lots of VW (70's) paint stuff in my files that's not on my computer. PM me if you need something sent by snail mail.

Here's a few things on my computer if it helps.

Tom

Actually, went back and checked my code book, and L63E is a valid code for Willow Green in 1972 (weidengrun) code 4310.

But the green pictured above certainly doesn't look like Willow Green (pictured below).

Dave, thanks for digging into your documentation. I am really curious to see what the real story is. I really need to send off for the COA from Porsche to see what they say.

I generally agree that it looks more like Irish Green than Willow Green when you look at photos of cars. And when looking at color charts (such as Andy's new one), it seems like everyones charts are slightly different, so its hard to know what to believe. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) For example, Tom's scanned image of a 1972 color chart (a few posts above this) shows Irish Green being VERY VERY dark and Willow Green much darker than the car in Mark's photo and more in line with what mine looks like. But I can't believe that Irish Green really is that dark as photos of cars that are supposed to be Irish Green look more like my car.

Here is another photo of my car with a larger area. I think the photo reproduces the color pretty well (at least on my monitor (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

I agree that the color looks too dark for Willow. However, that is exactly what the factory literature says. Perhaps I should scan the page so that you can read for yourselves. Perhaps that is the main reason I did not include the code in my list for so many years despite having the info available for the past 15 to 20 years. It is a similar situation with the two gold codes. Once we can get more definitive data we can nail them down. The L63E has to be rare, I only have Richard Casto's car with that code. I don't have a lot of data on L63K either, and all of them are earlier than Richard's VIN.

Let's beat the bushes for as much data as possible.
