The change on smog requirements that went from 67 - 73 occured when I owned the "Rocket".....that was when my twins were in diapers.....sooooooo....it wasn't THAT long ago that the /6 were exempt and should still be in the database. If they ARE NOT, they should be in a purge file that is accessible via the California Public Records Act at the BAR.....but what do I know.....(IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

BTW...those files should be accesible for 30 + years....ya might wanna hurry.

Yes all the 76 cars should be in the BAR database...as well as any car that has had a California smog test in the last 7 years.

Here is the webite link, try it yo'sef...:

http://smogcheck.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx

I just tried to search for smog test history on two original sixes that are in my area...Carls and KRKs. there is no data available for either of these two known sixes.

Love the analysis. As an engineer who does a lot of this, I'd say your review of 3000 Vin queried should carry nicely forward to the 115,000 total.
It Raises a favourite question of mine...Can anyone estimate how many 914s survive in the US? I'd be amazed if it is more than 10% being 30+ years out
I'm in Massachusetts, north west of Boston and I only know of 3 on the road in our area.

Cheers
Doug

There is more than that in the greater boston/new hampshire area....

Mark S, Richard T. Matt R. Mine, etc. etc....I am guessing about ~20?

I remember Brad posting an estimate of remaining teeners early this year, though most of them were sold in CA, so most of the survivors will be in CA. I am aware of a half dozen or so driveable teeners here in sunny (at least it was a few months ago) Connecticut.

Last night (from 4am to 7am) I wrote the code for reading entries out of the Ca BAR database over the web. It is non trivial, because they generate a cookie on each page that you have to send back to the server. Grrr.

I found the following VIN info, which I think will allow me to generate all the possible vins (seems pretty straightforward).

/**
* http://www.porschedecals.com/history914w.htm
*
* 914 VINs
* 470 29 00001-470 29 13312
* 471 29 00001-471 29 16231
* 472 29 01400-472 29 21580
* 473 29 00001-473 29 27660
* 474 29 00001-474 29 21379
* 475 29 00001-475 29 11369
* 476 29 00001-476 29 04100
*
* 914/6
* 914 043 0011-914 043 2668
* 914 143 0011-914 143 0443
* 914 243 0011-914 243 0260
*
* 916
* 914 233 0011 - 914 233 0020
* Prototype 914 143 0195
*
*/

Does this look right? I guess we are looking at about 140,000 queries - so if we do a query every 10 seconds (trying not to arouse too much suspicion) it will take 16 days to query the entire vin pool.

Is this illegal? The terms on the website say that the info is available for personal and non-profit use, so it seems okay to me.

Easier to ask forgiveness than permission.....hopefully the inquiries will not be construed as a denial of service attack.....good luck.

Nope - I was thinking of restricting it down to 1 every 10 seconds or so. That way it's not really any extra load for their server.

I ran the 71s vin (Tennessee) it was last reg in California in 99 (on the title) but there is no listing in the BAR database.

Could you have a car reg but it not be in the BAR database?

But wouldn't it be in the BAR database from previous years? Or do they (BAR) purge their data after the exemption comes into effect?

Of the 3,000 VINS I entered, the oldest record was from August 1996. They surely must purge records...looks like about 7 years back is all they keep.

There are also cars here in CA that I know exist, but have fallen off the BAR database and are not registered.

Not for that. All the time was taken with this:

CODE

String getVIN(String vin) throws Exception {
   HttpClient client = new HttpClient();

   GetMethod get = new GetMethod("http://smogcheck.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx");
   client.executeMethod(get);
   Cookie[] initcookies =
       client.getState().getCookies();

   String getBody=get.getResponseBodyAsString();
   get.releaseConnection();

   String viewstate = extractViewState(getBody);

   PostMethod post = new PostMethod("http://smogcheck.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx");
   NameValuePair varSearchBy  = new NameValuePair("Request", "rbVIN");
   NameValuePair varVin       = new NameValuePair("txtValue", vin);
   NameValuePair varButton    = new NameValuePair("Button1", "Submit");
   NameValuePair varViewState = new NameValuePair("__VIEWSTATE", viewstate);
   post.setRequestBody( new NameValuePair[] {varSearchBy, varVin, varButton, varViewState } );

   client.executeMethod(post);

   String page = post.getResponseBodyAsString();

   post.releaseConnection();

   Pattern pat = Pattern.compile("NO DATA AVAILABLE");
   Matcher mat = pat.matcher(page);
   if(mat.find()) {
     System.out.println("No Data");
     return null;
   }

   //System.out.println(page)
   // \003c & \003e
   pat = Pattern.compile("id=\"DataGrid1\"(.*?)</table>", Pattern.MULTILINE | Pattern.DOTALL);
   mat = pat.matcher(page);
   if( mat.find() ) {
     System.out.println("Got table");
     String table=mat.group(1);

     pat = Pattern.compile("<tr.*?>(.*?)</tr>", Pattern.MULTILINE | Pattern.DOTALL);
     mat = pat.matcher(table);
     while( mat.find() ) {
       System.out.println("Got Row");
       String row = mat.group(1);

       Pattern pat2 = Pattern.compile("<td.*?>(.*?)</td>", Pattern.MULTILINE | Pattern.DOTALL);
       Matcher mat2 = pat2.matcher(row);
       while( mat2.find() ) {
         System.out.println("cell: " + mat2.group(1));
       }

     }

   }

   System.out.println("not dead");

   return ",o";
 }

 public static String extractViewState(String page) {
   Pattern pat = Pattern.compile("VIEWSTATE\" value=\"(\\S+)\"", Pattern.MULTILINE);
   Matcher mat = pat.matcher(page);
   if( mat.find() ) {
     System.out.println("Gpt match");
     return mat.group(1);
   }

   return null;
 }

}

I do have to clean it up though.

You're a geek - but I knew that anyway. :-) Everyone likes their code to look slightly different, so I make no apologies; for this project I don't have to adhere to any coding standards. JBuilder will re-arrange it anyway I tell it anyway, so it's not a worry!

Nothing wrong with that. I grew up on emacs (or xemacs). I can do it all by hand - it just takes longer.

Same reason you had your car sandblasted instead of using Sand paper and wire brushes!

Oh yeah - there are command line code formatting tools out there if you prefer.

In JBuilder it's Right-Click -> Format All.
