Hi,

I have a quick question for you six conversion guys. Is it possible to just build an extension pipe on the 911 heat exchangers to make them work in a 914?

A friend of mine is swapping in a 3.0 and it has SSI's on it so he wanted to know if he could just make the extension pipe.

Thanks in advance for the info.

let's start with the obvious:

- they'll be pointing the wrong way

Ok well as long as I have already made 1 stupid mistake might as well go for the next. Would it be possible to flip them? In other words run the right side on the left & left side on the right and turn them around to point to the rear of the car? I guess I could go crawl under the 911 to see if this would work ... but having changed out a few sets of heat exchangers I am thinking maybe

Kind of like how renegade hybrids flips the LS1 intake to point to the rear of a 911 to gain clearence...

Ok so I looked at my 911 I think at minimum you could physically bolt them on facing toward the rear of the car... so not so obvious no Andy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) At least if they were flipped with left on right and right on left they would still bolt up to the heads... not sure if the heater box would clear the timing housing though

He could sell the SSI,s for enough to buy proper -6 headers.
The only 911 ones that work are the thermo reactor replacement headers , 3 into one stubbies.
kinda sorta

I did the very thing you're talking about when I first got my 3.0 running. I left the HE's pointing the right way and built some tubes with "U" bends to take the heated air output and bring it back down, under the heads, then forward to the 914 flapper boxes. The other ends of the exchangers hooked up to the air hoses from the engine like stock. I ditched the cat and built a flange to match the HE/crossover tube combination and send the exhaust backward to a single-entry muffler in the stock 914 location. It all worked, but the underside of the engine was nightmarishly crowded with stuff. The worst of it was that the crossover tube interfered with the gearshift, and I had to make a rod with an offset in it that just barely cleared everything.

I got rid of the setup fairly quickly and went to headers, then bought some 914-6 HE's and haven't had any hassle or cold driving since. Wish I could find some pictures of the old setup, but this was a long time ago (1983), before the digital camera era.

here is something I was thinking(future turbo ??)...how cool would it be to just run pipes out in FRONT of the rear wheels....? Kinda early Viper-ish...loud to be sure!
