Some pics of my 951.
I bought this 951 from a Pelican member in May. I've been driving it quite a bit. My trip started in Denver, then Indy, St. Louis, Pensacola, New Orleans, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and now Houston. It had 94k miles on it when I got it - and I've done about 4k so far. I'll continue driving it until I get back home to Indy in September. Til then I'm having a blast. It was a great original/stock car when I got it and my goal is to keep it as close to stock as I can, but make it as usable and enjoyable as possible. My few changes are: Porsche CDR220 radio, new speakers, hidden hitch so I can take my bike(s) with me and next is a Koni yellow setup with 968 sway bars. That's about it. The hitch can come off and no one will ever be able to tell it was there. Anyway, here are a few pics I took last week in Corpus - ok, well it's 10, but they're small (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Attached image(s) |

Very Nice indeed.
Are those good cars for daily drivers? Are the 968's any better or just more expensive to fix??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

There isn't a model of the 944 I haven't liked as they came out of the box. Even a clean stock 83' NA I think is a cool car. Your 951 is flat out stunning! The paint looks so deep. Very cool!

Justin,
I love these for a daily driver. This is the second one I've had. I've put quite a few miles in 951s both city driving and hiway driving. The only odd thing and I got used to it very quickly is how close your head can feel to the top edge of the windshield. I can't remember if my first one had power seats or not, but this one does and it seems that I can find a more comfortable angle of the seat bottom. They get great mileage, too. I'm getting around 28mpg on the freeway, and around town is reasonable, too - unless I spin the turbo up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I've never had a 968, but it was on my list when I went looking for this car. I started looking for a good normally aspirated 944 with a $5k budget. I couldn't really find one that I liked so I started looking for 951s and ended up nearly doubling my budget when I found this car. I found a few 968s that were convertibles and decent miles, but the prices are still a bit high. Coupes seemed to be tougher to find (unless they were beat up) and still pricey as well. |

Thanks for the compliments guys (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
I wish I could take credit for it - but since I just got it in May the credit lies to the 3 previous owners...Ohh, but I did get it washed and waxed 2 days before I took the pics (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

Sean, tell me some more about your hitch please. I hate to put a roof rack on mine but I would like some way to transport my bike on it should I choose to

Scott,
Here is a Link to JCWhitney's Page with the receiver. They are by far the cheapest for the part. It is made buy Curt Manufacturing. The part is drop shipped directly from Curt Mfg. I did a lot of research on this since Thule no longer makes the fit kit for a 944. I don't like the look of the Yakima racks, so a receiver mount seemed to make sense after I found an article by a guy who had a receiver on his 951 - probably to pull a little tire trailer. Here is a PDF File from Curt Mfg with the mounting details. I called them before I ordered and they were great to deal with. Since I was on the road when I got it, I took it to UHaul to do the install (I know - I'm ashamed - but I have no tools here). When I get it home I'll make some small covers to fill the holes when the receiver is removed. Oh, yeah, I'm gonna get it powder coated red so it disappears a bit more. It's only gonna handle 100 lbs of tongue weight and 1000 lbs towing capacity, so it's about useless for anything other than a lightweight bike rack or tire trailer. I got the Raxter 2 bike 1.25" rack. It was the lowest weight unit I could find and it was also the most secure. It works great and weighs about 28 lbs. That leaves about 70 lbs for 2 bikes - so if you've got a big ol downhill bike or a cheap Kmart bike check the weights! If you look closely, you can see the slightest hint of the receiver on the last pic. Also, you can see a bit of the profile in silhouette in the first pic. I'll look through my pics to see if I have a good shot of it. Lemme know if you need more info (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

I'm good (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I actually have a modified hitch I took off of of a 944 a few years ago. It was made to use the bumper shock bolts as the anchor for the rack. I may use it as the one you have looks to be basically the same.

nice car, I like the top right shot. Has that element of not quite real, almost painted look to it IMO.
Now, you could somewhat retain the stock look but gut the thing and install a Z06 drivetrain with a 505HP LS7, modified torque tube and GM rear diff for the extra power (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) sorry, but would you expect anything else from me??? I jest, but I considered doing just that myself. |
