wow. my trip there wasn't quite that hairy/scarey, but with a trailer, it mightta been...
glad you're back safe. i recall being in a 2nd-gear 4-wheel drift in the 26-ft UHaul up past Vail wondering to myself "and i'm doing this 'why' exactly ? ... " the things we do for these cars - and each other ... |

Thanks Sean. I'm familiar with Park City. Napped in the truck there on a previous road trip.

Sounds like quite the trip- glad you made it back ok!
Last Feb. I pulled a car hauler from N. Iowa to SF, San Louis Obispo, and down to Mission V to find a good 914 to bring back. It was pushing 5000 miles fast and furious with a white knuckle ride much like yours! It was fun- I'd do it again! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) rezron |

In late Oct. of '02 I drove a 914 from Chicago to Portland. Before I left Oregon (by plane) a trucker told me that if I had any weather problems it would be in Wyoming. Sure enough, hit snow just east of "Little America". Freeway was closed about 40 miles further west. Ended up going around on snow packed two lane roads. Evanston was where I reached safety. Not nearly like your experience, but enough to cause me to remember that stretch of I-80 for a long time. Good to hear you're home and able to tell the story.

I80 through Wyoming is a PITA in the best of weather. There is always a cross wind with enormous gusts. Lots of hills (and not those little rolling type either). I've seen cars on their tops just from rain and wind.
In the winter, it's just plain ridiculous to travel on it. |

Sounds like the same stuff I went thru to pick up the red roller in Nevada last year. Freezing rain, snow, black ice and a wheel falling off the trailer....makes for white knuckle times. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Glad you made it home safely. |

Great Story. And great story telling. The pics are a nice touch. Brings it all home.
Glad you made it thru so many close calls okay. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) I love driving.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) .....on dry pavement. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

We only saw two like that returning to Ca from Cheyenne on Jan 2. Its pretty strange driving by one of those, looking at the bottom of the trailer and finally the bottom of the cab. |

It was 2 semis on their sides in the median with tow trucks blocking traffic in both directions that forced me to the back roads. Actually, I was waiting in a rest area when a local came in and looked at a map on the wall and said he knew a way around. I followed him (new 4 wheel drive F 150) on a 30 mile loop on rutted hard pack. I was trying to keep him in site so I wouldn't get lost in the Wyoming wilderness. Quite a ride in a '71 914! I think my fingers are still in a gripping position.

I thought about taking 50 down to 70, but on a 2-lane highway, it would only take one stalled or wrecked car to end a winter road trip.

Man that is SCARY. I could tell by your voice that you where scared shitless. I have made some crazy trips.. but that one takes the cake. I spent several winters in Laramie Wyoming (school).. I know all about the snow. They closed the HWY about 9 times a year.. nobody in or out.
