I had just assumed it was that way because I was told that black was a special order color, cost additional/required additional body work.

Mine is a '73, within the first 1,000 of that year, so I also have vinyl on the windshield frame.

So, they took an already painted shell and painted black over it?

tell me if I'm wrong, but:
non original steering wheel
non original center console
non original radio
non original shift knob
non original carpets
original door panels destroyed for ugly speakers

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) Gustl

Steering wheel - non-orig, but nice if the orig wheel comes with it.
Center console - looks right, except for the guage facing area.
Radio - yup, non-orig
Shift knob - looks OK to me
Carpets - can't tell from the pic, but they look kinda light
Door panels - this will probably hurt the most. Destroyed!

Still, it's a very nice 914 & I'm betting on 15.5 - 17.0.

REDO! After seeing the subsequent pics, including poor panel fit & a non-detailed engine, and crap carpet, and on & on - this is a 10K 914 at BEST. Not that I would touch it for half that price.

My factory black car is silverish up under the dash like that too.

-Mike

I've seen more than a few 914's that were silver-ish up under the dash regadless of the body color.

My /6 was one of them and there is no doubt that the original color was tangerine.

The dash subframe was any color that they happened to grab when assembling the car. That's old news.

The car in the picture has a SILVER PAINTED FRONT FIREWALL ... That's part of the unibody, not some bolt on dash subframe ...

Completely different animal. I have never seen a car where only half of the body was painted in body color. But then again, i never looked closely at a factory black '76.

It's more than normal, but I'll guess $12,700. The 914 stereotype still remains and this may hinder a higher price.

I would have guessed all the above as well, except the carpet (I didn't notice).

Please correct me if I am wrong here, but didn't all front bumpers '73+ have nipples and '74+ have them as well? Plus, the hood crest & the rear PORSCHE reflector were from 911's as well.

The previous owner (IMO) seems to have been a bit vain/superficial with the add-ons.

Hm...

Maybe it's primer and not Silver paint. Just guessing here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

the 75-76 had the full rubber bumpers. The nipples were added to the older metal bumpers.

yes, the "update kit" also doesnt help its "originality" I rarely see one with the lock still in the back with the kit though

I wish the car was nicer overall so that the 914 could rack in big bucks. But for what is advertised (mint), its not quite where it should be.

though, it is BJ, should who knows what will play out

Hey T.C. can you check your blue 914. If I remember it's blue under the dash as well and it's a 76'. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Thanks T.C.!

Yeah Andy, that is what I am thinking now myself. If you look in T.C.s picture you can see the blue over spray. So maybe in the 75-76 years they changed the painting process? Maybe all tubs were painted some sort of primered grey and then shot their color but told not to bother getting up under the dash areas anymore? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

wasn't the 76 year technically just left over 75s they got rid of (aka late 75's)?

could explain the shortcuts. Why bother with the details if they are just trying to get rid of the shells.

That doesn't explain Mike's '73 that also is silver on the front firewall. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
