I finally have the motor out, and I am in the bay working on the rust I am finding. The engine shelf is going to need to be cut out because it is blooming between there and the inner long. Some pictures coming, it has been a long time.
Most of the car is stripped down. Of course, get in and find more rust and fun stuff. |

Why dont you come to Fells some time, you could use a cold one after all the work your putting into that thing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif)
Dont tell anyone... I kinda like the shaved door handles look, hit the button and the door pops open. I always thought that was soooo cool on the hotrods. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

This is taking a turn, I am ready to break the sawz all out and cut my front and rear fenders off.
I want to run the QRS fiberglass hardware, in fact I sort of changed my decision about not using fiberglass. I want to shave as much weight off this car as I can. I am just waiting to get some confirmation from the 914 world before I do so... but ah that would cut so much time off the restore instead of worrying about welding the fenders on, not warping them and welding flares on. This kills two things at once and is lighter. |

Spent some time erasing metal with the grinder and straightening the metal behind the fender from the previous accident damage.

I used the methods recommended by you folks. I back stepped the welding and skipped an inch each time.
The 75/25% mix is nice, and once I overcame my stupid of hey I have not welded since I spent all that time learning last November/December and turned the wire speed up to get the bacon sound as wall as moved the ball things became nice. My early welds on the passenger strut tower are ugly, but they penetrated and are solid/clean. I ground them down, and will be grinding them all down and seam sealing back over it once there is 2k primer on there. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/img534.imageshack.us-10389-1290114740.1.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/img823.imageshack.us-10389-1290114741.2.jpg) I am going to cut the back open where the strut tower meets the long and get in there. I spent a lot of timing cleaning the back of the weld areas as much as possible to bare metal that was shiny to avoid contamination. It looks like the hours of prep work paid off even when I sucked bad at first. |
