I kind of miss you crazy Canucks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I had such a great time up there with you all. I particularly liked Patricia's assistance. Walter, you are a lucky man to have such a bright woman (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Steve, you rock for bringing the big grill and cooking in the rain. I have pics to post of this later. Mark, the bear, thanks for opening your shop and house to us! There is a chance I will be closer to you all in the near future. If so, I cant wait to see you all again.

Buffalo?

I always said that was a silly place to build a city (think lots of snow).

Yeah, Buffalo really gets dumped on. But hey, 30 years ago I was driving a 914 around in a blizzard without problems even though I was one of the few on the roads. Now a Ski-Doo is even more appropriate for Buffalo.

Bump.

I finally decided to look up the proper amount of gear oil for the transmission. Remember I thought I did not put enough in since it was pouring back out before I had 4 litres in it.

Looking at Haynes, it says the capacity is only 2.5L. Where the hell did I find that it was 1.5G? So since I was able to put over 3L in the transmission, should I be taking some out?

The main reason I ask is that there was some gear noise on the way home from the clinic. Initially I thought that it could have been from not enough oil. But could it be from too much oil?

If not either of those, did I screw something up during assembly that would cause more gear noise (high pitched whine) than before the clinic?

Ideas?

I thought it was more oil than I remembered!

Get it out, with the car level it should only be as high as the bottom of the top plug.
Could be the source of the whine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

1- Did you replace the bushing?

2- Did you adjust the shifter correctly? If maladjusted it will rub and can cause noise.

3- When did "we" try to put 1.5G in the box? I put it in until it comes out the fill hole with the box level. Didn't we do that?

4- Too much oil is not going to cause a whine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

When you say high pitch, does it depend on the speed of the wheel or RPM of the engine.
- Speed of the wheel = lower int plate bearing, diff bearings
- RPM = upper int plate bearing

I'm going to be setting the diff when I convert the 901 4 speed into a 5-speed for my bug. I'll be replacing the diff bearings as well as it's only $50pr.
I'll (or we) will look at your tranny if you like. I imagine I could call on the Doc for a 2nd opinion.

Finally got that fscking bushing in place and the shift rod through it. Not sure if it was because its a six conversion or not, but it was very difficult to insert the shift rod back into the bushing. Ended up using a heat gun to put enough heat into the bushing so the shift rod would slide in.

Shifting is more "stiff" and less sloppy. I took it for a good drive up to Bellfountain. The shift from first to second seems better... it does't grind when fast shifting. I am still having a little trouble getting into first. Just the last part of the engagement requires more force. If the car is moving (at least a little) the engagement is easier.

Overall I'm happier with the shifting.

I've decided I have close enough amount of oil in the transmission based on how much I added during the clinic. Since I've basically put the car away now, I'm not going to be bothered putting the car up on stands to check the level. If anything I think I am over the level.

I did not check the transmission noise since I was driving with the top off all day. Didn't seem to notice the noise.

I'm just hoping that bushing stays in since the forward section was reduced when the bushing was blown out the back when attempting to install the shift rod once.

Um, ya. The bushing is hard to get in and I hope it is not too buggered up as well. As for the stiffer shifting into 1st, this is common for newer or stiffer synchro bands. It goes away after a while. Your adjustment may be off as well since you would have to readjust everything after inserting the bushing.

The bushing was fairly easy to get in, you just have to be inside and under the car at the same time. The shift rod afterward was the pain. I noticed that the shift rod already had all it's paint worn off at the bushing.

The symptom of the shifting easier with the car moving would still point to new synchro bands? I still need to understand how a transmission works. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I think the Doc is saying you still need to do fine adjustments on your shifter.

The stiffness you feel when shifting is because you repaired the tranny and it should work in.

If we replaced your 1st synchro band then it will definitely be stiff for a while.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Ok, so just trying to understand... I thought synchros were for matching the gear speeds when shifting. That is, bringing the shaft speed up or down with the gear that is being selected.

But, since this problem is actually better when the car is moving (gears rotating) as opposed to stopped (no shafts moving), why would the synchros matter? I'm just trying to understand better.

Or has it got something to do with the way the bands are constructed? I know getting that snap ring on was a pain. Is that the force I am pushing against when shifting at a standstill? Note that it's only 1st that has this issue... not 2nd, etc. I remember everyone saying the inside looked pretty good except for that broken bearing.
